Change is inevitable in urban mobility, and we are committed to paving the way for a better future.

Automation Engineer

We are seeking a mid-level Automation Engineer to support both greenfield and brownfield projects for road tunnels and highways. This role focuses on configuring and testing Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) on Siemens and Rockwell platforms and working closely with software team to integrate and test legacy system interfaces. The position is highly technical and hands-on, involving on-site commissioning in Singapore’s highway and tunnel infrastructure.

What are my responsibilities?

  • Configure, program, and update Siemens and/or Rockwell PLCs to meet project requirements for tunnel and highway control systems.

  • Perform on-site I/O checks, PLC program validation, and support commissioning activities.

  • Ensure all field I/O (sensors, actuators, safety devices) are correctly wired and communicating as expected. Troubleshoot and resolve PLC-related issues during testing and commissioning phases.

  • Work closely with the software/SCADA team to test and verify that PLC communications and control logic interface correctly with external systems including the legacy systems. This includes simulating legacy interface behaviour and troubleshooting any mismatches between new PLC outputs and existing SCADA inputs (and vice versa).

  • Oversee and validate the configuration of industrial networks and remote I/O modules for robust PLC system communication. Ensure network reliability and compliance with project standards.

  • Document PLC configurations, logic changes, and test results. Provide feedback and technical expertise to both the software team and electrical engineers.

  • Collaborate in cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of the PLC layer with overall tunnel/highway control systems.

What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Automation, or a related field.

  • Proven experience working with Siemens or Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC platforms. This includes programming and troubleshooting PLC hardware such as Siemens S7 series and Rockwell ControlLogix/CompactLogix.

  • Proficiency in using Siemens TIA Portal and Rockwell RSLogix/Studio 5000 development environments for PLC programming, debugging, and testing.

  • Strong understanding of PLC architecture and hardware design, including the use of remote I/O racks, distributed control, and integration of various subsystems (e.g., ventilation fans, lighting, pump controls in a tunnel).

  • Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus (RTU/TCP) and Profinet. Ability to configure and diagnose communications between PLCs, field devices, and central systems.

  • Experience in performing I/O checks, functional testing, and commissioning of automation systems in the field. Comfortable reading electrical schematics and using testing tools to verify wiring and signal integrity.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail in a live operational environment. Ability to work collaboratively with software engineers, system integrators, and site contractors to resolve issues under time constraints.

What else may help me to get ahead?

  • Experience with OPC UA or other modern industrial protocols for PLC-to-supervisory system communication is a strong plus. Familiarity with additional networks such as Profibus or Ethernet/IP is beneficial.

  • Prior exposure to SCADA systems or similar supervisory systems infrastructure projects. Understanding how PLCs interface with higher-level control software in tunnels or intelligent transportation systems.

  • Familiarity with road tunnel and highway systems is advantageous. This could include knowledge of tunnel equipment (ventilation, lighting, fire safety systems, traffic signs) or highway traffic management systems and how they are controlled/automated.

Additional Information

  • This role is based in Singapore and involves on-site work at local road tunnel and highway facilities. The candidate should be prepared to work in tunnel environments and adhere to safety protocols.

  • Projects are in live operational settings, so some testing and commissioning activities may occur during off-peak hours or overnight when tunnels can be safely accessed. Flexibility to accommodate occasional night shifts work during critical commissioning periods is expected.

  • This position is intended for mid-level to experienced automation professionals. Candidates should be able to work independently on technical tasks and coordinate with teams, without requiring constant supervision.

  • You will work closely with software developers, system engineers, and project managers in a multidisciplinary team. Strong communication skills are important to coordinate between the PLC/hardware side and the software/SCADA side.
