Position Summary:

As Illumina embraces the change for the next industrial revolution, the Automation Solution Center within Illumina Singapore Hub supports successful product launches and process improvements through automation solutions. Collaborate with HQ, Manufacturing Technology, and Transfer teams as part of ASC to deliver integrated automated solutions for high-volume manufacturing in Singapore.

This role is part of the Automation team within Engineering. An Automation Design Tooling Engineer combines automation engineering principles with tooling expertise. Responsibilities include designing, developing, and implementing automated systems, involving creation and modification of tools and equipment for manufacturing processes. The role requires mechanical engineering, system integration knowledge, and a strong understanding of automation technologies. Collaboration with Safety, Quality, Manufacturing, R&D, and other engineering groups is essential to incorporate user inputs into automation system design. Support all stages of automation solutions from idea generation to deployment and production release.

Leverage past project knowledge and feedback to improve automation design rules and explore new product feasibility with teams or partners.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement automated machinery and processes, including robots and other automation devices.
  • Design, build, and modify tools and equipment used in manufacturing, often with CAD software.
  • Identify opportunities to automate existing processes and enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and process issues related to automation and tooling.
  • Work independently and seek guidance from seniors or managers as needed.
  • Provide data on risks and recommendations within your area and at interfaces with other teams.
  • Select components and vendors responsibly and independently.
  • Track project expenses.
  • Collaborate with Safety, Quality, Manufacturing, R&D, and Engineering teams to develop User Requirements Specifications (URS) for new machines and improve existing equipment designs.
  • Support the integration of Industry 4.0 concepts into automation design and implementation.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineering or related field
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in automation equipment design in industry/factory settings and scale-up of machines for production
  • Deep knowledge of customized automated machine design and assembly
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, etc.)
  • Experience in FAT setup, proof of concept development, and automation simulation using SolidWorks and AutoCAD
  • Experience with highly automated liquid or powder filling and sealing tools is desirable
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing in high-tech consumables industries is desirable
  • Proven track record in automation tooling design resolving manufacturing challenges like scalability and error proofing
  • Good understanding of material selection, machine parts fabrication, automation technologies, robotics, electrical panels, and manufacturing processes
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Analytical problem-solving skills and high-level reasoning
  • Knowledge of Industry 4.0, DFMA, and DFM is preferred
