Job Purpose

The Audio Visual Technician supports all events at the auditorium and other campus venues. They work with stakeholders to ensure lighting, sound, and projection are prepared timely, providing on-site support during events. They also train students in audio, lighting, and technical skills for theatre productions. The role requires promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people, adhering to GESS Safeguarding/Child Protection policies, and reporting concerns appropriately.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide on-site AV and lighting support for events.
  • Set up, maintain, and operate AV equipment, lighting, and stage platforms during school events, assemblies, and functions.
  • Ensure high standards for event execution.
  • Uphold health & safety, rigging, protocols, and technologies.
  • Assist and train students in AV skills.
  • Coordinate with staff, contractors, and freelancers.

Lighting & Sound

  • Design lighting and sound for events.
  • Operate and program digital lighting boards.
  • Maintain lighting and sound equipment, manage accessories, and source upgrades as needed.
  • Setup microphones, musical instruments, and amplifiers.
  • Assist during rehearsals with technical support.

Training & Support of Staff & Students

  • Train and supervise students and interns in AV equipment use.

Equipment Supervision

  • Inspect equipment for defects and recommend solutions.
  • Supervise external vendors ensuring quality and safety.

Facility Management

  • Maintain the control room, storage, and auditorium in a safe, clean, and organized manner.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs.

Communicating

  • Liaise with vendors and stakeholders.
  • Facilitate external vendor work.
  • Collaborate with leadership, staff, and facilities teams.
  • Maintain effective interpersonal communication.
  • Participate in event planning and meetings.

General

  • Maintain professional appearance.
  • Work outside regular hours when needed.
  • Follow school policies.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by the Head of Events.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma/degree or equivalent preferred.
  • At least three years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in theatre, education, or arts sectors.
  • Skills with lighting consoles, audio mixers, troubleshooting.
  • Stage management experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency with MS Office 365, audio editing software (Mac), and QLab.
  • Knowledge of lighting design.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
