We are looking for solution-oriented software engineers specializing in machine learning (ML) / deep learning (DL). Join us to develop AI applications for ophthalmology, leading innovations in telemedicine for home monitoring. You will work on critical projects that aim to improve eye exam procedures.

Job Title: Asst/Research Engineer (Machine Learning / Deep Learning) - Clinical Research Coordinator

The ideal candidate should have industry experience with recommendation, classification, and optimization problems. You will collaborate with leading retinal ophthalmologists to address complex ocular data and prediction challenges related to maculopathy.

We seek a full-time, versatile software developer with strong Python and/or R skills. Web development experience is a plus. Candidates should have a background in data science, deep learning, and machine vision. Initiative, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills are essential for this varied and challenging role. A passion for software development and understanding of different platforms and SDKs are required.

The role also involves planning, conducting, and coordinating research projects and clinical trials at TTSH.

Engineering Roles & Responsibilities (30%)

  • Design and develop scalable ML systems for clinical applications.
  • Optimize ML methods for modern parallel computing environments such as distributed clusters and GPUs.
  • Evaluate existing features/ML systems and lead large cross-team efforts to reduce technical debt, starting from first principles when appropriate.
  • Conduct experiments to assess model performance, perform A/B testing, and iteratively improve accuracy.
  • Develop scalable classifiers and tools utilizing machine learning, data regression, and rule-based models.
  • Gather requirements and create feature roadmaps.
  • Deliver data science code in collaboration with clinical teams.
  • Support the Principal Investigator with necessary software coding.
  • Create technical specifications, flowcharts, architectures, and code documentation.

Clinical Research Coordinating Responsibilities (60%)

  • Plan and coordinate research projects and clinical trials, including patient recruitment, medication dispensing, follow-ups, and related activities.
  • Maintain databases and provide statistical support.
  • Collect data from case records and patient interviews.
  • Monitor research projects and clinical trials.
  • Oversee research activities managed by research assistants or IRRC.
  • Manage on-site visits by external stakeholders.

General Responsibilities (10%)

  • Coordinate research committee meetings.
  • Prepare posters and papers for research submissions.
  • Perform any other assigned tasks.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, data science, AI, life sciences, biomedical sciences, psychology, or related fields.
  • At least 1 year of relevant work experience.
  • Familiarity with Python development environments, machine learning, and machine vision.
  • Experience in areas such as recommendation systems, pattern recognition, data mining, AI, or related fields.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or R.
  • Knowledge of ML libraries like TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a solid understanding of algorithms, statistics, and probability.
  • Effective communication skills for explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with RESTful APIs and database management (NoSQL/RDBMS).
  • Ability to handle ambiguity in early-stage research projects.
  • Good independent working skills.
  • Compliance with domain-specific review board and institutional requirements (e.g., CITI, GCP, vaccinations).
