Job description

National Gallery Singapore is looking for a curious, hands-on Product Designer to help shape how visitors discover, navigate and engage with the Gallery and its art.

The role requires close collaboration across the organisation to understand visitor needs through both qualitative and quantitative data, frame the right problems, explore possibilities, and test ideas before significant investment is made.

This is primarily a digital product-design role. You will design and improve visitor-facing products and services across the Gallery’s digital ecosystem, spanning visit planning, ticketing, on‑site interpretation and post‑visit engagement. You will also contribute UX research and design expertise to selected spatial initiatives, including visitor orientation, wayfinding, and gallery spatial blueprinting.

You might prototype a new online visit‑planning journey, test how visitors navigate a Gallery space, develop reusable digital interface patterns, or translate research and operational data into a clear product roadmap.

We are looking for someone who combines strong UI and UX craft with human‑centred research, systems thinking and rapid prototyping. You should be comfortable moving between ambiguity and detail, from defining problems with stakeholders to building and testing tangible solutions.

You do not need to come from a museum, but you should be interested in art, culture and the ways museums can become more delightful, welcoming, accessible, and engaging for different audiences.

What you will do

  1. Design digital products and visitor experiences

  • Design intuitive and inclusive digital experiences across the visitor journey.

  • Translate visitor needs, organisational priorities, and operational constraints into information architectures, user flows, wireframes, interfaces and testable prototypes.

  • Carry work from early discovery and concept development through validation, design specification, implementation support and post‑launch improvement.

  • Work closely with technology teams and delivery partners to ensure that the implemented experience reflects the intended interaction and visual design.

  • Apply accessibility and inclusive‑design principles so that products work for visitors with different abilities, languages, levels of digital confidence and familiarity with museums.

  • Maintain a high standard of interaction and visual‑design craft while balancing usability, feasibility, maintainability and delivery constraints.

  • Apply UX research and design methods to selected spatial experiences, such as visitor orientation / wayfinding, spatial blueprinting, and movement through the Gallery.

  • Map, prototype, and test spatial journeys and concepts, translating findings into clear visitor‑experience requirements for internal teams and delivery partners.

  1. Research, frame and validate

  • Work with visitors, frontline colleagues and internal teams to uncover needs, behaviours, pain points, and opportunities.

  • Plan and conduct appropriate research, including contextual observation, interviews, journey mapping, co‑design, concept testing, and usability testing.

  • Synthesise qualitative and quantitative evidence into clear insights, opportunity areas, and actionable design recommendations.

  • Turn ambiguous requests into well‑defined problem statements, design hypotheses, and measurable outcomes.

  • Prototype early and at the appropriate level of fidelity to test assumptions before solutions are commissioned or built.

  • Establish feedback and evaluation loops so that products can improve after launch.

  1. Steward the Gallery’s digital design system

  • Serve as the steward of the Gallery’s digital design system for visitor‑facing products and services.

  • Develop and maintain reusable components, interaction patterns, accessibility requirements and practical design guidance.

  • Work with brand, content, digital and technology colleagues to ensure that the system reflects the Gallery’s identity and can be implemented consistently.

  • Maintain clear documentation that internal teams and external delivery partners can apply.

  • Review designs produced by project teams and vendors, providing constructive guidance on consistency, usability and accessibility.

  • Identify gaps and evolve the system based on emerging product needs, implementation realities and visitor feedback.

  1. Turn evidence into product direction

  • Work with visitor/ stakeholder feedback, behavioural data, analytics and operational information to identify patterns and prioritise opportunities.

  • Translate insights into prototypes, product requirements, experience specifications and phased roadmaps.

  • Define success measures with project teams and assess whether interventions have improved visitor outcomes.

  • Communicate the rationale behind design decisions through visual storytelling, demonstrations and concise documentation.

  • Balance visitor desirability with technical feasibility, operational sustainability, cost and long‑term maintainability.

  1. Collaborate across the Gallery

  • Partner and collaborate with teams across the gallery.

  • Facilitate workshops, design critiques, and working sessions that help teams align around visitor needs and make informed decisions.

  • Work with consultants, technology partners, and design vendors to frame briefs, review proposals and maintain design quality throughout delivery.

  • Provide clear specifications and feedback while remaining open to technical content and operational perspectives.

  • Help teams build confidence in human‑centred design through practical tools, methods and examples.

  1. Support museum innovation and AI initiatives

  • Contribute design and research expertise to visitor‑centred innovation and responsible AI initiatives.

  • Explore how AI and other emerging technologies could improve access to art, personalisation, orientation, learning and operational effectiveness.

  • Build lightweight prototypes to make emerging possibilities tangible and testable.

  • Consider privacy, accessibility, intellectual property, bias, transparency and long‑term maintainability when designing AI‑enabled experiences.

Qualification
  • At least 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in product design, UI/UX design, user research, design consulting, product management, or a related field.

  • A portfolio of UI, UX, or product‑design work that demonstrates your thinking, process, craft and contribution, not only finished screens.

  • Strong foundations in interaction design, information architecture, prototyping and visual interface design.

  • Experience applying human‑centred design methods to understand users, test assumptions and improve solutions.

  • The ability to create prototypes ranging from quick sketches and clickable flows to detailed, high‑fidelity experiences.

  • Proficiency with contemporary design and prototyping tools, particularly Figma, and experience in AI‑enabled design and prototyping (Make, Codex, Claude Code, etc.).

  • The ability to interpret research findings and data and turn them into clear design decisions.

  • Strong written and spoken English, with the ability to explain design decisions and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.

  • A collaborative, resourceful and hands‑on approach, with the ability to manage multiple streams of work.

  • Comfort working in open or ambiguous problem spaces and the judgement to bring structure, momentum and clarity.

It would be an added advantage if you have

  • Strong practical experience using AI in your daily design practice - for research synthesis, ideation, prototyping, content exploration, coding or workflow improvement.

  • Experience in museums, galleries, arts, culture, heritage, attractions or other public‑facing environments.
