Job summary

JEN by Shangri-La in Singapore seeks an Assistant Chief Engineer to support the Director of Engineering in the overall management of the Engineering & Maintenance Department. This role ensures hotel facilities, plant equipment, and building systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably to uphold guest comfort and operational excellence.

You will lead maintenance teams, implement preventive maintenance, manage the BMS and energy use, drive sustainability with Green Mark and ESG programmes,

Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Building Services Engineering, Facilities Management or related discipline.
• Minimum 5–7 years of hotel engineering or facilities management experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
• At least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
• Strong knowledge of building services systems and preventive maintenance practices.
• Familiar with Building Management Systems (BMS) and energy management principles.
• Proven leadership, communication and stakeholder management abilities.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and standby duties.

Job description

The Assistant Chief Engineer plays a key role in supporting the Director of Engineering in the overall management of the Engineering & Maintenance Department. This position is responsible for ensuring that all hotel facilities, plant equipment, and building systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably, while maintaining the highest standards of guest comfort and operational excellence.

As an Assistant Chief Engineer, we rely on you to:

• Support the Chief Engineer in managing the Engineering & Maintenance Department to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of hotel facilities and systems
• Lead and supervise the Maintenance and Preventive Maintenance teams, ensuring all maintenance activities are carried out effectively and in accordance with established standards
• Develop and oversee preventive maintenance programmes to maximise equipment reliability and minimise operational disruptions
• Manage the Building Management System (BMS) and monitor utility consumption to optimise energy efficiency and operational performance
• Drive sustainability initiatives, including BCA Green Mark certification, energy conservation, waste management, and ESG-related programmes
• Conduct regular inspections of hotel facilities and engineering systems to ensure asset integrity, safety, and regulatory compliance
• Lead or support emergency response efforts and ensure the readiness of all life-safety and critical infrastructure systems
• Assist in managing departmental budgets, capital projects, equipment upgrades, and energy-efficiency initiatives
• Liaise with regulatory authorities, contractors, and service providers to ensure compliance with statutory, environmental, and workplace safety requirements
• Prepare reports on engineering performance, audits, sustainability initiatives, and cost-saving measures for management review
• Coach and develop engineering team members while fostering a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and service excellence
• Assume the responsibilities of the Chief Engineer during his/her absence and represent the department in meetings, audits, and inspections

We are looking for someone who:

• Holds a Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related discipline
• Has at least 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in hotel engineering or facilities management, including a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory capacity
• Possesses strong technical knowledge of building services systems, preventive maintenance practices, and engineering operations
• Is familiar with Building Management Systems (BMS), energy management principles, and BCA Green Mark requirements
• Demonstrates proven leadership abilities with the capability to lead, motivate, and develop engineering teams
• Has strong problem-solving, crisis management, and decision-making skills, particularly in a fast-paced operational environment
• Possesses a sound understanding of workplace safety, fire safety regulations, and statutory compliance requirements
• Has excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organisation
• Is able to work flexible hours, including weekends, public holidays, and standby duties as required by operational needs
