Job description

Thesis - Verification of VIN-number using computer vision

Location: Göteborg, SE, 405 08

Position Type: Student

Permanent/Temporary:

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Project Description

The Volvo Trucks Plant in Tuve, Gothenburg, produces heavy trucks for the global market. The frame rail factory produces frame rails for both Tuve plant and other Volvo Trucks assembly plants all over the world.

The frame rails have the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) punched into the steel before surface treatment and later in the process a paper label containing additional information is added. It is crucial that the two markings contain the same information.

Today this is verified manually but the engineering team wants to investigate if the verification process can be automated using the Volvo Vision System (VVS)

Task

In collaboration with the local engineering team and the VVS development team, investigate the possibility to use computer vision to read the VIN number and compare to the information on the paper label. The students are expected to:

  • Identify stakeholders and gather requirements

  • Set up test equipment

  • Verify possibility to fulfil requirements

  • Recommend further actions to industrialize the solution

We require the work to be performed by a team of two students. Please state the name of your partner in your application

Applicants without partner will not be considered.

Main location for the project group will be the assembly plant in Tuve, Gothenburg. The students are expected to spend most of the time on-site, collaborating with the engineering, maintenance, and production staff. Therefore we require at least one student to speak Swedish.
