Job summary

Newcode.ai is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own retrieval workflows for confidential documents, ensuring accurate citations and robust performance. You will design parsing, embedding, indexing, and ranking pipelines and build agentic retrieval with multi-step loops.

Work fully remote across the EU/EEA, with emphasis on scalable Python and FastAPI services, multi-language retrieval, and secure data handling in a fast-growing startup environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years building backend systems in production.
• 2+ years shipping retrieval or RAG systems used by real users.
• Experience diagnosing and fixing retrieval regressions.
• Built/maintained a golden set with labels and metrics.

Responsibilities

• Own the retrieval pipeline end to end: parsing, chunking, embeddings, indexing, and reindexing.
• Design search combining semantics and keywords; manage ranking and metadata filters.
• Build agentic retrieval with multi-step loops and cost/latency controls.
• Develop evaluation layers with golden sets, metrics, and tracing.
• Ship services in Python and FastAPI; ensure data security and isolation.
• Maintain cross-language retrieval for multilingual contexts.
• End-to-end ownership including maintenance and tech debt.
