Project Description

Third-cycle subject: Computer Science

This doctoral position is part of an ambitious 5-year Wallenberg Scholar project titled "Scalable and adaptive inferencing for democratizing AI". With a project budget of 18 million SEK, the goal is to dramatically reduce the cost and power required for serving large language models such as ChatGPT. The work will primarily involve:

Design, implementation, and evaluation of distributed systems and networks for machine learning inference

Applying machine learning concepts to devise agentic frameworks

Supervision: Professor Dejan Kostic and Associate Professor Marco Chiesa. Final admission decisions will determine supervision.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet basic eligibility under Chapter 7, 39 § of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance:

  • Completed a second-cycle degree (e.g., Master’s).
  • Completed at least 240 higher education credits, including 60 second-cycle credits.
  • Acquired equivalent knowledge, within or outside Sweden.

Additionally, English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is required.

Successful candidates should demonstrate:

  • Ability to independently pursue research.
  • Collaborative skills and professional approach.
  • Analytical ability to work with complex issues.
  • Preferred background: Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or Machine Learning. Knowledge of systems and networking is highly desirable.
  • Personal qualities: Scientific curiosity, goal-orientation, perseverance, and strong problem-solving abilities.
Target Degree
Information Regarding Admission and Employment

Only admitted postgraduate students may be employed as doctoral students.

Employment duration corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years.

Employed doctoral students may perform tasks within their role (maximum 20%) such as teaching or administrative duties.

Employment contracts are renewed yearly or for a maximum of two years at a time, depending on program and licentiate studies.
