Job description

Overview

Postdoc position in solid-state batteries focused on modelling and synthesis of electrolytes. The project is part of the COMPEL initiative and aims to investigate ceramic electrolytes for next-generation composite solid-state batteries by combining atomistic simulations with experimental validation to identify structural and chemical features that govern performance. The work includes exploring halide and sulfide ceramic electrolytes, integrating simulations with experimental characterisation, and evaluating ionic transport properties and interfacial stability to inform design of new materials.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct atomistic modelling and synthesis of ceramic electrolytes for solid-state batteries, combining computational and experimental approaches.
  • Identify material features that govern performance and use simulations to design improved composite architectures.
  • Prepare and characterise promising materials through simulations and laboratory experiments, including ionic transport measurements and interfacial stability assessments.
  • Collaborate across departments (Materials Science & Engineering ITM and Chemistry CBH) to integrate modelling with experimental validation.
Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent in Physics, Inorganic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related subject with experience in electrochemistry (to be met no later than the time the employment decision is made).
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Strong laboratory and computational skills.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues, with a focus on gender equality.

Preferred qualifications

  • Doctoral degree obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline.
  • Experience in solid-state batteries and electrochemical characterization techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with inorganic synthesis and DFT modeling, including wet chemical synthesis, glovebox/Schlenk techniques, solid-state chemistry, and modelling of inorganic materials by DFT (e.g., VASP, Quantum ESPRESSO).
  • Innovative mindset, ability to work independently, good collaboration skills, and teamwork orientation.
