Job description

Since its founding in 1827, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering institutions.

Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) at the Department of Physics seeks a motivated, structured, and collaborative postdoctoral fellow to join the nuclear fuel materials team. The project, supported by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, Westinghouse, and Uppsala University, involves studying fission product kinetics by ion implantation of advanced nuclear fuel (Uranium Nitride). The successful candidate will lead research efforts using experimental and computational methods to evaluate fission product diffusion kinetics and the formation of the high burnup structure (HBS) in uranium nitride.

Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct ion implantation experiments on uranium nitride.
  • Analyze fission product diffusion and HBS formation using advanced characterization techniques.
  • Develop and apply mesoscale and multiphysics finite‑element models.
  • Collaborate with academic and industrial partners to interpret results.
  • Publish findings and present at conferences.
Qualifications
Requirements
  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, with the eligibility requirement met no later than the employment decision.
  • PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering Mechanics or a related field.
Preferred qualifications
  • Doctoral degree obtained within the last three years.
  • Hands‑on laboratory experience in sintering, powder metallurgy, and advanced characterization.
  • Experience in mesoscale and multiphysics finite‑element modelling.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Strong teamwork and independent working abilities.
  • Motivation for high‑quality research.
  • Teaching experience (advantage).
  • Awareness of diversity and equality issues, with a focus on gender equality.
