Swerim AB in Stockholm invites a curious MSc student to investigate hydrogen uptake and embrittlement in high-strength steels used in critical engine components. You will engage in materials characterization, laboratory work, and hydrogen analysis within the H2MATICE project alongside Volvo and other partners.
The project is a master thesis (30hp) starting Q1 2027 or negotiable, with a 50,000 SEK stipend upon approval.
Project Description Hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines (H-ICE) are a promising technology for reducing emissions in heavy-duty transport. However, hydrogen can degrade metallic materials through hydrogen embrittlement, affecting component performance and lifetime. This master thesis will investigate hydrogen uptake and embrittlement in high-strength steels used in critical engine components. The work will involve materials characterization, laboratory testing, hydrogen analysis, and evaluation of material performance in hydrogen environments, contributing to the ongoing H2MATICE project with other industrial partners (Volvo, Traton, Bulten Group, Ovako). Qualifications We are looking for a curious and collaborative Master of Science student with a passion for materials science and sustainable energy technologies. Preferred background: Materials Engineering, Good communication skills in English. Experience with materials characterization or laboratory work is a merit. Project time The project is intended for a master thesis (30hp). The start date is Q1 2027 or can be mutually decided through negotiations.
