Assistant Professor in Epidemiology or Biostatistics

Karolinska Institutet (KI) invites applications for up to 21 early‑career researchers across a wide range of subject areas, with a particular emphasis in epidemiology or biostatistics. KI is one of the world’s foremost medical universities, and its Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest of its type in Europe.

Researchers in MEB work on psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaceutical, genetic and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders and biostatistics. The department benefits from a collaborative spirit, shared resources, and close links to healthcare providers.

Your mission

As an Assistant Professor, you will:

• Develop and lead an independent research group, producing high‑impact work and securing external funding.
• Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses, gaining valuable pedagogical experience.
• Contribute to departmental collaborations and foster a strong academic environment.
• Maintain a regular on‑site presence to participate in and shape the department’s activities.

Eligibility requirements

• PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area.
• At least two peer‑reviewed original publications as first or last author, in addition to the doctoral thesis.

Priority is given to candidates who earned the PhD within the last seven years. Earlier completion is considered if special circumstances—such as parental leave, long‑term illness, union positions or mandatory military service—are documented.

All applicants must complete three weeks of higher education pedagogical courses within two years of starting the position, unless equivalent training was obtained beforehand.

Assessment criteria

• Scientific quality, originality and feasibility of the research plan.
• Documented experience in research environments outside KI, especially international experience.
• Ability to secure external funding as principal investigator.
• Strong publication record in high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals.
• Contribution to the department’s long‑term scientific development and academic culture.
• Academic leadership experience.
• Fluency in spoken and written English.

The assessment is holistic; no single criterion is a formal requirement.
