Job Title: Transportation Manager
Reporting to: Supply Chain & Operations Director
Responsible For: Transport Planning and Fleet Operators, Administrator, Drivers
Hours of Work: Core hours are between 08:30 am and 17:00 pm, with a high degree of flexibility required to meet the demands of the business.
Main Purpose of Job: Leads, empowers, and develops the Transport team. Safely and effectively manages its people, fleet, 3PL providers, budget, IT, and other resources in a customer-focused and cost-efficient manner to meet business requirements and support profitable growth. Identifies risks, issues, and opportunities, deploying innovative solutions to improve logistics delivery.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures Health and Safety, Environmental, and Operator's Licence compliance, delivering best-in-class customer service measured against KPIs for Safety, Service, and Profitability.
- Provides leadership to develop the Transport team with creativity, flexibility, diplomacy, and consistency.
- Utilizes company operating systems and communication devices effectively, ensuring accurate reporting.
- Focuses on balanced scorecard results and sustainable improvement through People, Financial resources, Customer Service, and Business Processes.
- Oversees cost control and KPI performance, actively seeking efficiency improvements and cost reductions.
- Manages 3PL providers, ensuring cost-effectiveness, expenditure control, service excellence, and purchase order management.
- Ensures MI is in place for optimal management of the driver fleet, meeting customer and reporting requirements.
- Deploys controls and procedures for customer service and communication management.
- Champions a customer-first approach, engaging with internal and external customers to meet and exceed expectations.
- Acts as escalation point and authority for vehicle maintenance and transport compliance.
- Maintains knowledge of legislative requirements and best practices relevant to the transport industry.
- Ensures health and safety procedures are followed, including training, reporting, and emergency procedures.
- Ensures compliance with Operating Licence obligations with rigorous controls and procedures.
- Oversees vehicle management, including liaising with fleet, safe operations, and monitoring vehicle weights.
- Plans driver resources strategically to maximize fleet capacity using software and hardware platforms.
- Ensures administrative processes are completed timely.
- Collaborates with warehouse and other stakeholders to optimize logistics solutions for customer service.
- Promotes adherence to company policies, procedures, and legislation, especially regarding health and safety.
- Participates in ad-hoc projects and performs other duties as required by senior management.
Key Skills / Attributes:
- Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage
- Minimum of five years' experience in a similar environment
- Customer, people, and results-oriented
- Logical, systematic problem-solving skills; ability to manage change
- Commercially astute, analytical, high numeracy skills
- IT literacy with ability to leverage software and hardware platforms
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
