Job description

Purpose Statement

The job of substitute ECEAP assistant teacher/teacher is done for the purposes of providing quality, comprehensive child development services to preschool children and their families and encouraging parental involvement in educational planning, goal setting, and center activities. This position will work as a substitute on an as-needed basis.

This job reports to the director, Center for Early Childhood Services, and the lead teacher.

Functions

  • Acts as a support and resource person for families for the purpose of assisting the teacher in case managing specific needs with families, advocating for parents, and encouraging parent involvement in the program.
  • Maintains classroom equipment, supplies, student records, (e.g. instructional materials, meal counts, attendance, fire safety checklist, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items, providing reliable information, and/or ensuring a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, nap times, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides set up and service of meals and snacks for the purpose of meeting nutritional needs of students.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Performs related duties as assigned. Related duties may not specifically be listed but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's classification of work.

Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

  • applying pertinent policies, regulations and/or laws,
  • planning and managing activities,
  • preparing and maintaining accurate records, and
  • operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications.

KNOWLEDGE Is Required To Perform Basic Math, Including Calculations Using Fractions, Percentages, And/or Ratios, Read a Variety Of Manuals, Write Documents Following Prescribed Formats, And/or Present Information To Others, And Understand Complex, Multi-step Written And Oral Instructions. Specific Knowledge Required To Satisfactorily Perform The Functions Of The Job Includes:

  • appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws,
  • age appropriate activities,
  • lesson plan requirements,
  • community resources, and
  • stages of child development.

ABILITY Is Required To Schedule Activities, Collate Data, And Use Basic, Job-related Equipment. Flexibility Is Required To Work With Others In a Variety Of Circumstances, Work With Data Utilizing Defined And Similar Processes, And Operate Equipment Using Standardized Methods. Ability Is Also Required To Work With a Diversity Of Individuals And/or Groups And Work With Similar Types Of Data. In Working With Others, Problem Solving Is Required To Identify Issues And Create Action Plans. Specific Abilities Required To Satisfactorily Perform The Functions Of The Job Include:

General Requirements

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures, providing information and/or advising others, and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the agency's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions.

Experience

Job related experience with is desired.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Certificates & Licenses

Maintain a current pediatric CPR/first aid certificate

Maintain a current Washington State Department of Health Food Worker Card

Disaster plans and emergency procedures training

Universal precautions for prevention of transmission of bloodborne pathogens training

Preventing, identifying, and reporting child abuse and neglect training

Clearances

Mantoux tuberculosis (TB) skin test clearance

WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance (at employee's expense)

Continuing Education/Training

Must complete mandatory training provided by NEWESD 101
