Onboard Structural Snr. Superintendent – MRO

Job Purpose / Objective

The Onboard Structural Senior Superintendent is responsible for directing and supervising all onboard structural-related operations where relevant projects are taking place, whether for rigs and/or vessels or other internal work in the yard.
The Onboard Structural Senior Superintendent is responsible for delivering the works safely, on time, to the client's satisfaction and in accordance with the project contractual obligations and International Maritime Industries Management System (IMIMS).
The role involves working closely with the Structural Manager, Senior Welding Superintendent, Structural Superintendents, Welding and Structural Supervisors, Project Managers, QC, Welding Engineers, Safety and Project Managers, and production teams or other internal departments as required to ensure that all assigned scopes are executed as described above.
Ensures production line efficiency and proper housekeeping onboard and, when required, prepares budgets/cost estimates for production/projects.
Although primarily this role is for the onboard vessels location, it may be expected that the Onboard Structural Senior Superintendent will be liaising with the workshop section at times.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Adheres to, reinforces, and promotes IMI Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Policies.
  2. Attend daily departmental meetings to update the Structural Manager regarding the project's progress status and any serious matters in terms of equipment & tools, consumables, and lack of resources preventing the onboard structural team from achieving the project's deadline. Receive and follow the instructions from the Structural Manager regarding priority of the projects and their critical paths by allocating the workshop workforce accordingly.
  3. Hold daily meetings with the structural superintendents and supervisors to ensure that the onboard manpower works on the right priorities, check the physical progress of the work, and provide technical advice.
  4. Develop comprehensive execution/repair plans, including detailed schedules and resource allocation.
  5. Provide sound knowledge on various types of steel fabrication and repair work onboard the vessels.
  6. Ensure all repair and maintenance works are carried out in accordance with the approved procedures and project specifications by meeting the required quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  7. Lead and manage onboard superintendents, supervisors, foremen, charge-hands, tradesmen, including subcontractors to meet the required deadlines of the project.
  8. Ensure, in conjunction with the Procurement-Supply Chain Group, that all materials and equipment are procured and delivered in accordance with the production and project contract requirements.
  9. Ensure effective and consistent interaction with other production superintendents as required.
  10. Monitor actual man-hours against budgeted man-hours and take appropriate steps to correct overruns. Control the overtime to contribute to the best projects and gross margins.
  11. Liaise with the engineering department regarding the project’s mechanical activities. Liaise with other trades to ensure project schedule adherence.
  12. Ensure that the onboard supervisors book the correct hours/timesheets to the right project order numbers and job numbers for project cost capturing and control.
  13. Check and monitor material waste.
  14. Provide feedback for bid preparations whether for feasibility and tendering and/or change of scope.
  15. Ensure availability of all necessary structural equipment and tools, to be in good working condition and properly calibrated without exceeding the expiry date.
  16. Training and development of workshop personnel, conducting trade tests whenever necessary.
  17. Fully responsible for delivery of all Inspection Test Records (ITR’s) under the relevant discipline by effectively delegating to the team.
  18. Regularly visit project work onboard the vessels and in the workshop or other open areas where fabrication and repair activities are taking place to check on progress and give technical advice and guidance. Ensure all control measures are in place for safety, environmental aspects, and housekeeping.
  19. Prepare individual appraisals for all subordinate staff and workforce and recommend training requirements.
  20. Assist the Structural Manager in preparing departmental annual budgets, productivity norms, and manpower planning for continual improvement of productivity.
  21. Ensure that a high standard of order and cleanliness is maintained throughout the workshop areas.
  22. Perform other relevant tasks as requested by line management.

Qualifications & Experience

Education - Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline or diploma with extensive relative experience.

Professional Qualifications - Marine/structural related professional qualifications or relevant time served.

Competencies:

  1. In-depth knowledge of onboard steel repair processes, techniques, and materials used in MRO for ships and rigs in a shipyard environment, familiarity with relevant industry standards, quality control procedures, and dimensional tolerances.
  2. Proven experience in production planning, scheduling, and resource allocation. Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet project timelines.
  3. Dealing with a multi-cultural environment.
  4. Documentation management.
  5. Excellent understanding of Engineering drawings, Structural drawings, Shop drawings.
  6. Sound knowledge on tools/equipment and consumables and material grades. Application of best repair practices with quality control and assurance.
  7. Understanding of Asset Management & ERP systems, and ISO Standards.
  8. Stress and Time Management.
  9. Strong leadership level and managerial skills, strong command, problem-solving, and strong decision-making abilities.
  10. Excellent communication skills (written & oral).
  11. Physically fit and able to work in extreme climatic conditions.

Experience

At least 12 years’ experience in the MRO shipyard environment with extensive experience in structural works and managing teams.
