Attends annual review and performs departmental in-services.

Maintains regulatory requirements, including all national and JCI regulations.

It is the duty of every employee to report any negative or abnormal or unexpected event / incident as soon as possible after its occurrence by filling the appropriate Electronic Occurrence Variance Report (OVR).

Follows and assists in the implementation and interpretation of policies and procedures. Review RCMC IPPs manual (computer system) annually.

Monitor compliance with legislative requirements and organization polices and procedure and take appropriate action to correct any area of non-compliance.

Attends and actively participates in meetings of committees as assigned. Assists in data collection for quality improvement.

Attend 75% of all department meetings.

Attends annual review and annual departmental competencies.

Ensure orders, receives, secures, monitors, and accounts for drugs, and related supplies and administers and dispenses drugs to established policies, procedures, and nursing protocols.

Operate personal computers, including database, word processing, presentation, and other related medical software.

Deals with patients, families and careers in order to aid resolution of complaints.

Communication and interpersonal techniques as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

The OB couplet staff nurse is expected to have knowledge of all clinical aspect related to this area.

Provides and / or coordinates patient care, education, and documentation in the Obstetric area including patient assessment pre and post procedure, documenting care / instructions given in computer / paper format.

Demonstrates the ability to provide and assure the carrying out of established nursing procedures, for ante and post-partum patients assuring a safe clean environment is maintained.

Reports results and pertinent information to physician and appropriate persons.

Assists physician with variety of procedures, exams and / or operations of diagnostic equipment as assigned.

Administer medication in accordance with RCMC policies.

Performs GTG monitoring.

Assess pain levels according to RCMC policies and act accordingly.

Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.

Practicing infection control methods / protocols

Reading and interpreting patient charts; Detecting unusual patient behavior related to specific health conditions;

Initiates emergency resuscitative measures according to adult resuscitation protocols.

Offer emotional support and guidance to mothers and families during the postpartum period, addressing their questions, concerns, and educational needs.

Provide lactation support and assistance with breastfeeding techniques, positioning, and troubleshooting common breastfeeding challenges.

Educate parents on newborn care practices, infant safety measures, and postpartum self-care to promote a smooth transition to home.

Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as lactation consultants, social workers, and pediatricians, to coordinate comprehensive care for mother-baby.

Post-partum management :

  • i. Assess the patient accurately using the BUBBLE-HE format. Report all abnormal finding
  • ii. Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients’ (both mother and infant) care plans
  • iii. Assists mother with her hygienic needs
  • iv. Checks mother for any post-partum bleeding
  • v. Inspect C-section incision (if applicable)
  • vi. Performs emotional status checks on mother, recognizing symptoms such as those related to post-partum depression
  • vii. Takes mother’s vital signs. Document and report all abnormal finding

Baby rounds assignment :

  1. I. Attending deliveries and providing initial assessments and interventions of newborns.
  2. II. Provides specific care immediately after birth (in collaboration with the Medical neonatology and Apgar score)
  3. III. Complete initial well baby management. Document all finding and report immediately to neonatology if abnormal finding is identified.
  4. IV. Monitors bonding between mother and infant
  5. V. Takes infant’s vital signs
  6. VI. Provide assessment and planning for individualized Newborn care.
  7. VII. Vaccinates the newborn
  8. VIII. Ensure newborn national screening is completed
  9. IX. Responds promptly to the needs of a newborn
  10. X. Ensures that the tasks set by the neonatologist and the Head Nurse are delivered accurately in terms of quality and efficiency.
  11. XI. Takes samples for the laboratory tests.
  12. XII. Performs procedures and treatments as prescribed by the physician neonatologist.
  13. XIII. Reports any changes in the evaluation of the newborn.
  14. XIV. Measures input/output of newborn.
  15. XV. Responsible for quality and efficiency of the medical care.
  16. XVI. Prepares and demonstrates to the mother the new technique of breastfeeding the baby (Bottle feeding is discouraged and physician’s order is required).
  17. XVII. Monitors mother and infant and reports adverse reactions to any treatments or medications being given.
  18. XVIII. Educates mother on sore nipple management.
  19. XIX. Teaches mother newborn care.
  20. XX. Respects the rules of asepsis.

To undertake delegated responsibility for the department in the absence of the Head Nurse / Charge Nurse.

  • Provide clinical leadership to ensure the provision of highest quality nursing care.
  • Promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence based practice.
  • Acting as a role model and expert clinical practitioner.
  • Supervise and teach trained staff and health care assistants.
