Job summary

Attends annual review and performs departmental in‑services.

Leadership :

I. Serves as a role model and preceptor for the Labour and Delivery Unit

II. To promote and maintain standards of professional practice in order to

enhance quality of care for patients

III. Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner

IV. Assists in the monitoring, procurement and proper inventory of supplies.

Assists in maintaining equipment

V. Supervise junior staff midwives, practice‑midwife, as well as midwifery, nursing students / interns.

VI. Attend annual (or more frequent) appraisal

Communication :

I. Communicating with patients of diverse ethnic backgrounds

II. Operate personal computers, including database, word processing, presentation, and other related medical software.

III. Communication and interpersonal techniques as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

IV. Ensure good communication with appropriate team professionals / patients using discretion and maintaining confidentiality and a level of continuity and quality of care.

V. Maintain legible and contemporary records at all times, reflecting the management of care.

VI. Communicate information effectively with the patient to assist them in making informed choice with regard to maternity care

VII. Liaise with the CNM / ADON for professional issues, which affect the safety of mother and baby.

Education :

I. Provide education to patients and families, maternity procedure.

II. Be accountable for maintaining a safe and responsible approach to own sphere of practice.

III. Attend relevant mandatory professional development training including CTG, obstetric emergencies, child protection, Health and Safety (Fire Lecture and manual handling.

Be confident and competent in all areas of midwifery, therefore able to carry out total midwifery care during the whole period of confinement.

Plan and provide individualized care based on careful history taking, medical and social assessment as early in pregnancy as possible.

Maintain a high standard of midwifery care based on evidence based practice.

Give clinical guidance to other professional as required.

Conducts ongoing assessments as determined by the expectant mother condition and / or the RCMC policies, procedures or protocols and reprioritizes care accordingly.

Participate in the co‑ordination of clinical activities of the midwives, working in collaboration with women, medical staff and multidisciplinary team involved in the provision of care

Monitor maternal and fetal well‑being throughout labor, including uterine contractions, fetal heart rate patterns, and progress of labor.

Recognize signs of complications or abnormalities and initiate appropriate interventions as necessary

Preparation of mothers for Cesarean sections as well as assist doctors with the administration of Pitocin or other pain medication.

Perform thorough assessments of pregnant women upon admission to the labor and delivery unit, including vital signs, fetal heart rate monitoring, and cervical dilation

Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner.

Conduct deliveries under the direction of the physician and care for the newborn infant.

Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as established by individualized plan of care for the mother and fetus

Manage complications in pregnancy and childbirth, in accordance with the principles of basic emergency obstetric car

Provide emotional support and encouragement to women in labor, helping them cope with pain and anxiety through various comfort measures and relaxation techniques

Documents patient assessment findings, physical / psychosocial responses to nursing intervention and progress towards problem resolution.

Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.

Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients.

Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.

Arrange for patient transfer to other departments and, complete required documentation.

Assist obstetricians during vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections, including preparation of equipment, positioning of the patient, and provision of sterile supplies.

Manage labor, using the patograph.

Practicing infection control methods / protocols

Reading and interpreting patient charts; Detecting unusual patient behavior related to specific health conditions.

Provide accurate pain medications and checking the patient’s recovery status or progress.

Treat postpartum haemorrhage (including manual removal of placenta and injection oxytocin’s). Stabilize and refer required cases

Prepare the birthing room by sterilizing the entire room, including the bed, equipment and any other materials.

Detect and manage (or refer) obstetric emergencies, according to the principles of basic emergency obstetric care.

Perform pre‑ and post‑delivery care of mother and infant, applying ID bands on the infant and mother

Refer complications of labor and birth when necessary.

Communicate pertinent information to patients, families, and colleagues in a clear, compassionate, and culturally sensitive manner.

Provide immediate newborn care with a focus on airway, warmth and breastfeeding.

Administer medications for pain relief or to facilitate labor progression under the direction of the healthcare provider.

Provide routine newborn care, including physical examination, care of the umbilical cord, immunization, etc.

Provide emergency care for newborns (including hypothermia, infections of eye or cord stump, etc.) and infants, according to standard nursing principles.

Initiates emergency resuscitative measures according to adult / newborn resuscitation protocols.

Encourage exclusive breastfeeding and provide nutrition counselling to mothers.

Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of labor progress, interventions performed, medications administered, and maternal‑fetal assessments.

Prepare pre and post‑delivery operations (sterilization, supply management, cleaning, preparing birthing suites, etc

Check the equipment in the delivery room and make sure that they are all functional

Equipment and Machinery :

The staff midwife is expected to have knowledge of all equipment used in the area,

however may not have daily clinical involvement.
