Job Overview:
The Senior Principal Project Engineer is responsible for solving unique and complex problems with broad impact on the business. They proactively identify and resolve the most challenging issues affecting management and project direction. This role requires a specialist in Project Engineering with extensive knowledge of the Engineering function, influencing program and resource allocation within their discipline, and working within general policies and industry guidelines. Conceptual and innovative thinking are essential to develop creative solutions to engineering challenges.
Responsibilities
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Manage the engineering scope of a McDermott project.
- Establish and implement project procedures to ensure quality and technical compliance with contract documents.
- Oversee technical execution supporting business considerations.
- May serve as a Unit/Area manager or Project Engineering Manager.
- Assist in proposal preparations for prospective projects.
- Potentially act as the Project Manager for smaller projects.
- Promote safety in designs and work processes.
- Help prepare and understand engineering contract requirements.
- Coordinate with Engineering and Design Leads.
- Develop and implement the Project Execution Plan, including multi-office execution (MOPEX), responsibility matrices, and communication procedures.
- Ensure effective interdisciplinary communication, document discussions, and manage technical correspondence.
- Prepare reports, control project costs, schedules, and budgets.
- Manage changes proactively and develop project engineering documentation.
- Review work with clients and internal teams, coordinate third-party interfaces, and lead project handovers.
- Review and improve company processes and interface with various internal and external stakeholders.
- Anticipate and address business and regulatory challenges.
- Solve complex problems impacting the business and influence project management decisions.
- Present complex ideas effectively to senior stakeholders.
Reporting Lines and Liaison:
Reports to: Project Manager, Project Engineering Manager
Functional: Manager of Project Engineering/Engineering Director
Liaises with: Project Engineer, PEM, PM, Discipline Lead Engineers, Engineering Managers, Procurement, Construction/Fabrication, Project Controls, Finance
Supervises: Project Engineers, Discipline Leads
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering.
- 15-20 years of Project Engineering experience, including 5-10 years as a Project Engineering Manager.
- Preferably registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or a member of a professional society.
- Flexible in role reassignment, capable of representing the company, and proficient in current methods and software.
- Recognized as a PEM or PE within the company.
- Broad technical knowledge of engineering codes, standards, and procedures.
- Experience in field assignments, international projects, proposal development, and project management roles.
- Ability to interpret contractual documents and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
