Job Overview

Uvera is seeking a passionate and driven Microbiology Intern to join our Food Laboratory and contribute to cutting-edge research in food safety and shelf-life extension. This is a unique opportunity to apply your microbiology expertise in a real-world setting, conducting biological analyses, preparing selective culture media (Salmonella, E. coli, etc.), and monitoring the sensory qualities of food over time. You’ll play a key role in supporting our mission to reduce food waste, while collaborating with our product team to translate lab insights into innovative solutions that make a real impact.

Responsibilities
  • Microbiological Analysis: Perform routine biological analysis on different types of food products to assess microbial content.
  • Utilize a variety of testing methods to detect and quantify microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast, and molds.
  • Culture Media Preparation: culture media for general microbial detection as well as selective media for specific microbiological strains such as Salmonella, E. coli, and other relevant pathogens.
  • Quality Control: Conduct quality control checks to ensure the accuracy and reliability of microbiological test results.
  • Organoleptic Evaluation: and analyze the organoleptic qualities of food samples, assessing factors such as taste, texture, and aroma throughout their shelf-life.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed records of all experiments, tests, and results.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing findings and provide recommendations for improvements.
  • Collaboration: collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including research and development, quality assurance, and production, to address microbiological aspects of food safety and quality.
  • Adherence to Regulations: compliance with local and international regulations and standards related to food safety and microbiology.
Qualifications
  • Recently graduated with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Food Science, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in microbiology research and/or food laboratories.
  • Strong understanding of microbiological techniques and methodologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of selective media preparation for pathogen detection.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong written and verbal English and Arabic communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with food microbiology and laboratory techniques.
  • Familiarity with GSO, SFDA, ISO and other relevant quality standards.
  • Knowledge of HACCP principles.
  • Proficiency in using microbiological testing equipment.

Type of employment: 6 months Internship

Work mode: On-site

Work location: KAUST Research & Technology Park, Thuwal, Saudi Arabia.

Transportation: Daily shuttles between Jeddah and KAUST are available.
