Job Purpose:
The Second Engineer is heavily involved in scheduling, directing, and supervising maintenance within the engine room. This includes planned maintenance, repairs, and overhauls of critical equipment.
Job Responsibilities:
- Maintenance and Planning: Assists the Chief Engineer in planning maintenance tasks, based on work-planning meetings.
- Work Distribution: Distributes daily work assignments and ensures working hours are adhered to.
- Spare Parts Management: Maintains and updates spare part inventory.
Operational Expertise:
- Plant Knowledge: Possesses in-depth knowledge of plant operations, piping systems, and machinery functions.
- Machinery Maintenance: Responsible for repairs and maintenance of all onboard machinery, including deck equipment.
- Performance Monitoring: Reports machinery abnormalities and general conditions to the Chief Engineer.
Safety and Compliance:
- QHSE Procedures: Maintains awareness of and adheres to correct Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHSE) procedures.
- Risk Assessment and Toolbox Talks: Ensures Risk Assessments and Toolbox Talks are conducted.
- Safety Equipment: Ensures safety equipment in the engine room and machinery spaces is maintained.
Record Keeping and Organization:
- Engineering Records: Maintains accurate engineering records.
- Tool and Store Management: Oversees the proper care and organization of tools and stores.
- Engine Room Cleanliness: Responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of the engine room, bilges, steering gear room, and related workshops/stores.
Leadership and Development:
- Chief Engineer Understudy: Actively understudies the Chief Engineer, assisting with duties and responsibilities.
Policies, Systems, Processes, Procedures, Standards and Reports:
- Follow all relevant policies, processes, SOPs, and instructions to ensure controlled and consistent work.
- Assist in preparing accurate and timely MIS reports to meet standards.
Safety, Quality & Environment:
- Apply safety, quality, and environmental policies to ensure safety, compliance, and high-quality delivery.
Continuous Improvement:
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives considering international best practices, cost reduction, and productivity enhancement.
Qualifications:
- Certificate of Competence Second Engineer
- International Medical Certificate
- Advanced Fire Fighting
- High Voltage Operation & Maintenance (1000 Volt and above)
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other Than Fast Rescue Boats)
- Security Awareness Training for Seafarers with Security Duties
- Safety Training for Personnel Providing Services to Passengers
- Crowd Management Training
- Crisis Management and Human Behavior Training
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
- Personal Survival Techniques, Search and Rescue
- Prevention of Marine Pollution
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years in marine engineering
- Experience with Caterpillar, MAN, Volvo, and MTU engines
- Experience with propulsion systems, including propellers and jets
