About the Role

The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring workplace safety and compliance by conducting inspections, audits, and risk assessments. This role involves investigating incidents, monitoring critical operations, and providing technical expertise on health, safety, and environmental matters.

The Safety Officer develops and enforces HSE policies, facilitates training and drills, oversees hazardous work permits, and ensures adherence to safety regulations. Additionally, the role includes maintaining firefighting and hazardous materials systems, implementing ergonomics programs, and preparing reports for management to support continuous safety improvements.

Role Functions

  • Conduct safety inspections and audits.
  • Perform surveys, surveillance, and site audits for compliance.
  • Investigate all accidents and occupational health issues, and provide recommendations.
  • Provide technical expertise on HSE-related matters to support the safe execution of operational demands.
  • Offer technical guidance on safety aspects of operations, including hazardous work and confined space entries, and participate in issuing permits as needed.
  • Consult on safety-related issues, including interpreting safety procedures and regulations.
  • Conduct safety meetings (monthly and pre-job safety meetings).
  • Act as an on-scene participant and leader during emergency situations.
  • Advise and instruct on various safety-related topics, such as firefighting, working at height, manual handling, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Conduct risk assessments and enforce preventive measures, personnel orientations, training sessions, and drills.
  • Support the development of HSE policies and programs.
  • Review existing policies and measures and update them in accordance with legislation.
  • Inspect premises and personnel activities to identify issues or non-conformities.
  • Oversee installations, maintenance, and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Stop unsafe acts or processes that pose danger or health risks and implement the company’s hazard observation system.
  • Prepare reports on occurrences and provide statistical information to upper management.
  • Develop and implement an on-site HazCom program.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and preventive maintenance of firefighting systems.
  • Apply the company’s hazardous materials segregation policies on-site.
  • Enhance and develop on-site ergonomics programs.
  • Maintain and complete JSAs for all non-routine jobs requiring a PTW.
  • Maintain and update SDS as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Certification in HSE (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, ISO 45001, and ISO 14001) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in HSE roles, preferably in the industrial field.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and best practices.
