Job description

Patient handling and treatment:

  1. Assess patient status prior to, during, and after dialysis treatment, and inform the physician of significant changes in general health, weight, heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, vascular access, etc.
  2. Comply with local and corporate safety, hygiene, and infection control regulations, especially NC Standard Good Dialysis Care and NC Standard Hygiene and Infection Control.
  3. Perform patient connection and disconnection.
  4. Administer correct anticoagulation of the extracorporeal circuit and medications during treatment, following patient prescriptions.
  5. Monitor patients during treatment and notify the physician of any changes requiring medical attention.
  6. Handle tunnel and non-tunnel central venous catheters properly.
  7. Educate patients on managing their health conditions, including nutrition, hygiene, and fistula care.
  8. Assist patients with haemostasis post-dialysis as needed.
  9. Perform blood sampling for laboratory tests.
  10. Carry out emergency interventions and resuscitation procedures.
  11. Prepare and distribute meals to patients, if applicable.
  12. Assist patients with arrival and departure from the dialysis unit, if applicable.
  13. Prepare beds and chairs for treatment, if applicable.
  14. Use proper medical equipment for examinations, such as BCM, ECG, etc.
  15. Prepare and administer medications, anticoagulants, and manage dialysis supplies and disposables:
  • Check the availability, integrity, and validity of disposables, disinfectants, and medications before each session.
  • Transport supplies from storage to the treatment room following hygiene protocols.
  • Supervise or perform collection of medical and non-medical waste, adhering to hygiene and infection control standards.
  • Manipulate dialysis machines:
    • Perform machine start-up, disinfection, add bicarbonate and disposables, and conduct necessary tests before, during, and after treatment.
    • Report any irregularities in machine functioning to the Head Nurse or technician.
    • Prime circuits, connect bloodlines and needles, and set treatment parameters according to medical prescriptions.
    • If applicable, perform system start-up and shut-down procedures, including water systems and CDS.
    • Check service labels, hydraulic disinfection status, and potential equilibration cables.
  • Document treatments as required by procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members:
    • Support and mentor less experienced nurses as directed by the Head Nurse.
    • Provide comprehensive information to the next shift nurses, physicians, psychologists, and other clinical staff.
  • Peritoneal Dialysis tasks (if applicable):
    • Educate patients on hygiene, nutrition, PD procedures, complications, and emergencies.
    • Support and participate in PD treatment initiation.
    • Assess and document patient status, including blood pressure, heart rate, edema, temperature, diuresis, weight, and ultrafiltration.
    • Verify correct PD treatment performance.
    • Maintain hygiene and proper waste disposal in PD treatment rooms.
    • Follow physician instructions on patient assessment, lab testing, and documentation, including test sampling, result recording, and performing QA tests.
