Job description

Basic Function

Administers anesthesia to patients during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures performed at the JHAH Health Center. Assesses and treats critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Assists the Chief Anesthesiologist in other duties as assigned.

Scope

Responsible for serving as an Anesthesiologist specialist to provide consultation and administer the full range of anesthesia methods and techniques. Maintains high-level professional performance according to standards of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Work is performed in the JHAH Health Center, providing anesthesia services 24/7. Assists the Chief Anesthesiologist as required and may supervise the entire Anesthesia & Critical Care Division in their absence. Professional and administrative guidance is received through discussions with the Chief Anesthesiologist to ensure policy adherence. The incumbent often works independently of professional supervision.

Principal Contacts

Daily contact with Chief Anesthesiology Services, physicians, nursing staff, operating room personnel, patients, and families to carry out duties effectively.

Principal Duties
  1. Provides anesthesia using the full range of agents, methods, and techniques, observing safety standards related to anesthetic agents and equipment. Maintains competence in anesthesia specialties and clinical services according to privileges.

  2. Provides technical advice and guidance to nursing staff and offers orientation/training in new techniques and procedures as needed.

  3. Interviews patients scheduled for surgery to develop an anesthesia care plan, establish rapport, and alleviate fears.

  4. Evaluates patients post-operatively to monitor recovery, assess complications, and make recommendations.

  5. Provides medical assessment, respiratory, and cardiovascular support to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care and Step-down Units.

  6. Assists the Chief Anesthesiologist, including supervising the Recovery Room, and serves on Johns Hopkins Saudi Healthcare committees and teams. Contributes to continuing education within the department. Acts as the Chief Anesthesiologist when assigned.

  7. Keeps current with new procedures and techniques in anesthesia.

  8. Stands on-call as assigned for emergency surgeries, obstetrics, or medical procedures.

  9. Performs other duties as directed by the Chief Anesthesiologist.

  10. Must live in the hospital premises when on-call.

Experience
  1. Minimum of two years managing all types of anesthetic agents and techniques across all patient ages.

  2. Post-certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology or post F.F.A.R.C.S. (or F.C.A.) examination.

Certifications/Other Requirements
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safe use of all general anesthetic agents, techniques, and methods currently accepted in anesthesia practice.

  • Ability to assess personnel, equipment, and the anesthesia environment on-site in the absence of the Chief Anesthesiologist.
