Job description


Basic Function
Perform activities as Family Medicine Specialist primarily and exclusively in Emergency Medicine for JHAH. Examines diagnoses and treats patients with potential or actual emergency conditions. Acts as consultant in the area of Emergency Medicine and is responsible for education of JHAH medical and para-professional staff in Emergency Medicine. Serves as Chief Triage Officer in the disaster setting as required.
Scope
• May be assigned to any Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) outpatient or inpatient service in any JHAH facility or area served by JHAH.
• Examines and treats the wide variety of patients presenting to EMS or in other settings as required.
• Maintains current knowledge of the latest treatment modalities for all types of emergency patients.
• Is competent in managing without supervision emergency medical and surgical conditions encountered in the practice of emergency medicine.
• Supervises General Practice physicians assigned to EMS.
• Supervises on-line medical aspects of care in EMS and resolves questions concerning medical care or admin strategies which may arise within the service or between services/health care providers.
• Works on a shift rotation in EMS.
• Has teaching responsibilities which may include medical conferences, ACLS, ATLS, PALS and other local physician/nurse continuing education activities.
• Is involved in the Division Continuing Quality Improvement Program.
• Reports to the unit head and Chief, EMSD.
• Is responsible for making certain non-clinical administrative decisions as authorized by the Chief, EMS.
• Is responsible for emergency medical response and care for potentially critically ill or injured patients outside DHC as required, such as air medical response and evacuation.
• Is familiar with local or industrial factors which may be hazards or leads to morbidity.
• Work hours are assigned to meet the operational needs of the unit.
• Direction is through the Unit Head.
Principal Contacts
• Frequent contact with patients and their families regarding medical findings and treatment. Frequent close contact with nursing, para-professional staff and consultants. Occasional contact with physicians and hospitals outside JHAH, when patient transfers are being considered.
• Contact with EMS staff, students and residents in delivery of educational programs and supervision.
• Daily with Unit Head.
• Ongoing with JHAH managers.
• Occasional public and community contact through communicating policy changes, revisions, and/or introduction of new work rules.
Principal Duties
• Performs the professional duties of a family practice emergency medicine physician in a manner consistent with his/her training/experience and in accordance with the privileges delineated by the Credentials Committee.
• Is capable of serving as a consultant to the general practice physician for selected cases of difficult diagnoses or treatment commensurate with his/her training. Is particularly suited for this role in areas which lack Specialists in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Pediatrics by virtue of his/her additional expertise. Is capable of providing comprehensive care to the family whenever such a need Exists.
• Will refer cases to Specialists in Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics as appropriate; particularly whenever the medical problem exceeds his/her qualifications and/or training.
• Is capable of performing independently in emergency situations requiring rapid, decisive action and accurate judgment, must be capable of rendering treatment in such situations in a manner consistent with the standards of medical practice. Must be capable of directing nursing and ancillary medical personnel into utilizing their skills for the care to the emergency patients. May be required to accompany patients requiring medical assistance during transport by air or ambulance if such evacuations are in the best interests of the patients.
• Delivers high quality family medicine and emergency medical care.
• Takes medical history, examines patient, orders appropriate diagnostic studies, and initiates treatment. Interprets diagnostic data, makes a diagnosis and recommends/orders treatment, medication and

• Administers life-saving and immediate treatment as dictated by patient s diagnosis and condition.
• Performs emergency treatment for in-patients as needed, such as in response to cardiopulmonary arrest (code blue).
• Active in teaching and training activities in emergency medicine for physicians, nurses, students, residents and para-professional.
• Responds to emergency requests for medical aid as consistent with the policy.
• Respects the confidentiality of all medical information.
• Advises company of employee capacity to perform work.
• Active in Division QI and Disaster Preparedness activities.
• Gives advice in matters related to emergency medicine to JHAH physicians and other healthcare professionals who may consult him/her.
• Possesses and maintains a current license to practice medicine in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Experience
At least three (3) years experience following completion of specialty training.
Certifications/Other requirements as applicable
• Proficient in English
• Good physical and mental condition
• Current medical license from country of original
• Arabic speaking is preferred.
