Job Description

The English Teacher will be a specialist educator responsible for teaching and planning English lessons aligned with the UK National Curriculum objectives for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. The teacher will work within the specialist teacher model, ensuring high-quality instruction for students in Years 5-8, and will play a key role in supporting the development of literacy across the school.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Plan and deliver engaging and effective English lessons for students in Years 5-8, ensuring alignment with UK National Curriculum objectives.
  2. Differentiating instruction to meet the needs of students with varying attainment levels and proficiency in English, providing appropriate challenge and support.
  3. Assess student progress through formative and summative methods, using data to inform teaching and ensure progression.
  4. Work collaboratively with other English specialists and the wider teaching team to develop high-quality curriculum resources and schemes of work.
  5. Foster a love of reading, writing, and critical thinking in students, inspiring them to engage with literature and language.
  6. Support and coach class teachers in Years 1-4 in developing best practices for literacy instruction, ensuring a strong foundation in English language learning.
  7. Contribute to the development of whole-school literacy initiatives and interventions.
  8. Participate in English department meetings, professional development opportunities, and school-wide events.
  9. Maintain high expectations for student behaviour, engagement, and achievement, upholding the school’s values and ethos.
  10. Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress, strengths, and areas for improvement.

Requirements

  1. A degree in English, Education, or a related field.
  2. PGCE or Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  3. Experience teaching English at Key Stage 2 and/or Key Stage 3, with a strong understanding of UK National Curriculum objectives.
  4. Proven ability to support students with different attainment levels and varying English language proficiency.
  5. Experience in or willingness to support and coach other teachers in English instruction.
  6. A commitment to continued professional development and reflective practice.
