Job Summary
The Consultant is responsible for providing care to patients (inpatient and outpatient, including those admitted to the Intensive Care Unit) while maintaining a high level of professional performance in accordance with:
- Evidence-based medicine.
- Professional medical ethics and JCIA standards.
- Hospital medical by-laws.
- Laws of the Ministry of Health in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other applicable regulations, according to the departmental quality plan.
Providing effective leadership of the department, maintaining an appropriate quality plan using measurable performance improvement standards in the field of intensive care.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure, through actions, that superior quality medical treatment, compassion, and understanding are provided to every patient at NMC Hospitals and Clinics.
- Provide patient care within the scope of professional competence and clinical privileges for both in-patients and out-patients.
- Practice within relevant and scientifically valid standards, guidelines, and criteria.
- Conduct regular ward rounds individually or as part of a team to formulate multidisciplinary treatment plans.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the specialty's range.
- Assess and refer appropriate patients to other medical facilities and accept referrals within the specialty.
- Participate in the department's on-call rota for patient care and admission.
- Respond to emergencies, offering advice and participating in problem-solving related to his/her specialty.
- Uphold patient rights regarding security, confidentiality, and privacy.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and legible medical records for all patients.
- Take a leadership role in organizational performance and supervise junior staff duties.
- Lead performance-improvement initiatives, measuring, assessing, and improving clinical and non-clinical processes as part of the Departmental Quality Plan.
- Actively participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) through hospital activities and external conferences, including literature review, case reporting, and research.
- Participate in training programs for junior medical staff and in-service training for nursing staff and technicians.
- Continuously update medical knowledge and skills.
- Attend committee meetings related to quality improvement, infection control, etc.
- Follow departmental policies, hospital by-laws, rules, and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by hospital administration or department head, within his/her knowledge and skills.
- Educate patients and families according to policies, documenting education in medical records, involving them in care planning, and respecting their goals and preferences.
- Provide health promotion and education tailored to patient needs, literacy, language, culture, and circumstances.
Duties Related to Subspecialty
- Be available for emergencies to advise on subspecialty issues and accept referrals.
- Cover emergency consultations in the subspecialty as per duty roster.
- Participate in daily ICU management activities, including triage, bed allocation, discharge planning, policy recommendations, quality and infection control activities, and resource utilization review.
- Conduct regular ICU rounds, manage patients with subspecialty issues, and assist in referrals when necessary.
- Perform critical care procedures such as airway management, vascular line placements, CPR, temporary pacing, and tube thoracostomy.
- Serve as team leader for ICU patient management, integrating care for complex cases.
- Participate in CME activities and stay current with medical literature.
- Follow hospital policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
Reporting to
Head of Department
Specialty consultants, other departments, nursing staff, respiratory therapy, healthcare professionals, patients, and families.
Supervises
- Senior registrars, registrars, residents, respiratory therapists, nurses, and other paramedical staff assigned to him/her.
Qualifications
A minimum of:
- Education:
- Graduation from an accredited medical school, completion of specialty/subspecialty training, with Saudi Board, Arab Board, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, FRCS, or equivalent.
- Desirable:
Higher qualifications in the specialty/subspecialty are preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum five (5) years post-qualification experience.
- Current valid license to practice medicine in the specialty area.
- Registration with the Saudi Commission of Health Specialties and/or a current license to practice in Saudi Arabia.
- Desirable:
Additional subspecialty experience and academic affiliations are advantageous.
