Occupational Therapy (OT) is a skilled rehabilitation service that helps people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities.

Career Overview:

Occupational therapy involves the therapeutic use of everyday life activities (occupations) with individuals or groups to enhance participation in roles, habits, and routines in various settings such as home, school, workplace, and community. It focuses on engagement in meaningful activities of daily life, like self-care, education, work, or social interaction, especially to enable participation despite impairments or limitations in physical or mental functioning.

Practitioners have specialized training in physical, social, psychological, neurological, and cognitive aspects of human performance, along with expertise in the social, cultural, and physical environment interactions to maximize self-confidence, self-esteem, independence, and quality of life.

Services are provided for habilitation, rehabilitation, and health and wellness promotion for clients of all ages with disability and non-disability needs, including the acquisition and preservation of occupational identity in the context of illness, injury, or other conditions.

Career Responsibilities and Duties:

Practitioners design occupation-based intervention plans considering the person, their engagement in valuable occupations, and the context to facilitate change or growth in client factors, enabling engagement through environmental adaptations when necessary. Typical duties include:

  1. Observing patients, reviewing medical history, and asking questions.
  2. Evaluating patient conditions and needs.
  3. Developing treatment plans with specific goals.
  4. Assessing and modifying the patient’s environment for accessibility.
  5. Educating families and employers on patient care and accommodations.
  6. Recommending mobility aids and providing gait training.
  7. Reevaluating clients post-intervention to monitor progress and adapt plans.
  8. Documenting activities and progress for evaluations, billing, and reporting.
  9. Training patients in using adaptive equipment to increase independence.
  10. Providing early intervention for infants and toddlers at risk of developmental issues.
  11. Helping elderly patients maintain independence and safety at home.
  12. Creating functional work environments and collaborating with employers.
  13. Working in mental health settings with individuals facing developmental, mental, or emotional challenges.
  14. Assisting individuals with substance abuse or related disorders.
Specific Lab Instructor’s Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Preparing lab materials and equipment, managing external communications, and taking attendance.
  2. Demonstrating and explaining practical components based on prepared materials.
  3. Supporting practical applications and training effectively.
  4. Attending and committing to full lab sessions and clinical visits, maintaining professionalism.
  5. Exhibiting professional and positive behavior, responding to student needs, and facilitating group work.
  6. Providing feedback and suggestions for course development.
  7. Assisting with practical exams, including setup and grading.
  8. Supervising community service activities.
  9. Ensuring lab stations are well-maintained, clean, and properly set up, collaborating with staff as needed.
Requirements:

Qualifications: A minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognized institution, licensed by the Ministry of Health in the country of graduation, recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia and WFOT.
