Job description

Primary Role Focus

The Machine Shop Lead is responsible for the operation and management of the production department to produce machined components within the specified delivery date and to high-quality standards. This role reports to the Manufacturing Manager.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  1. Set up, program, and machine parts according to setup instructions and part drawings.
  2. Perform manual component modifications and repairs as required.
  3. Ensure timely and accurate completion of all parts.
  4. Plan machine time, shop space, material, and commodity usage.
  5. Assist with raw material planning and management.
  6. Assist with scheduling and production planning for machine work.
  7. Create job routers for products moving through production.
  8. Coordinate third-party services and logistics.
  9. Monitor tooling in the shop and ensure stock levels are adequate.
  10. Perform quality assurance checks, including dimensional inspection of parts and recording deviations.
  11. Communicate machining best practices to designers.
  12. Ensure calibration is maintained on all precision measuring equipment.
  13. Plan and assist with repairs and maintenance, including regular preventive maintenance of equipment.
  14. Maintain cleanliness of workspace and shop.

Position Requirements

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of machine shop experience required.
  • Previous leadership experience required.
  • Fanuc programming experience required.
  • Manual lathe and milling experience required.
  • Good understanding of tooling, insert grades, and geometry required.
  • Oil & Gas machining experience required (background in threads or downhole tools is an asset).
  • Proficiency in reading and understanding machining blueprints.
  • Experience with QA principles and measurement equipment.
  • Knowledge of machining practices and procedures.
  • Beginner to intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience with live tooling (lathe) is an asset.
  • Experience operating a variety of CNC/manual machines is an asset.
  • Experience with API-Q1 / ISO standards is an asset.

Education and Training

  • Machinist accreditation preferred.
  • First aid certification.

Physical, Business, and Safety Requirements

  • Compliance with Packers Plus Health and Safety Program.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Shift work, including weekends and on-call.

Safety Sensitive

  • Subject to pre-employment medical assessment.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-incident, random, and reasonable cause).
