  • Occupational therapy is defined as the therapeutic use of everyday life activities (occupations) with individuals or groups to enhance or enable participation in roles, habits, and routines in various settings such as home, school, workplace, and community. It is a therapy based on engagement in meaningful activities of daily life (such as self-care skills, education, work, or social interaction), especially to enable participation despite impairments or limitations in physical or mental functioning.

    Practitioners have specialized training in the physical, social, psychological, neurological, and cognitive aspects of human performance, as well as expertise related to social, cultural, and physical environments to maximize self-confidence, self-esteem, independence, and quality of life.

    Services are provided for habilitation, rehabilitation, and health promotion across all age groups, addressing disability- and non-disability-related needs, including the acquisition and preservation of occupational identity in the face of illness, injury, or disability.

  • Career Responsibilities and Duties :
  • Practitioners design occupation-based intervention plans considering the transactional relationship among the person, their engagement in valuable occupations, and the context, to facilitate change or growth in client factors and interaction for successful participation. They adapt and modify environments or objects as needed.

    Typical duties include :

    • Observing patients, asking questions, and reviewing medical histories.
    • Evaluating patient conditions and needs.
    • Developing treatment plans with specific goals.
    • Assessing and modifying patients' environments for accessibility.
    • Educating families and employers on patient care and accommodations.
    • Recommending mobility aids and providing gait training.
    • Reevaluating clients to monitor progress and refine intervention plans.
    • Documenting activities and progress for evaluations, billing, and reporting.
    • Teaching patients to use adaptive equipment.
    • Providing early intervention for infants and toddlers.
    • Assessing and modifying work environments for independence.
    • Working in mental health settings to support individuals with developmental, mental, or emotional challenges.
    • Assisting individuals with substance abuse or related disorders.

    Specific Lab Instructor’s Duties and Responsibilities :

    • Preparing lab materials and equipment, coordinating external communications, and managing attendance.
    • Demonstrating practical skills and explaining lab activities.
    • Supporting practical applications and training.
    • Attending full lab sessions and clinical visits, maintaining professionalism.
    • Exhibiting professional and positive behavior, supporting group work, and providing feedback.
    • Assisting in practical exams and supervising community activities.
    • Ensuring lab stations are well-maintained and cooperating with staff.

    Requirements

    • Qualifications : Certification & Registration
    • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognized institution, licensed by the Ministry of Health in the graduate’s country.
