Job Purpose:
- Install, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot the advanced life support systems that sustain water quality parameters essential for the health and welfare of the Corallium's diverse marine collection.
- Monitor system performance, conduct preventative maintenance, and respond to emergencies while supporting the operational needs of the 25 specialized habitat exhibits representing Red Sea ecosystems.
Job Responsibilities:
System Operation & Monitoring
- Operate complex life support systems including filtration, ozone generation, UV sterilization, protein skimming, and water circulation components.
- Monitor critical water quality parameters including temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, ORP, and nitrogenous compounds, making adjustments as needed.
- Perform regular system checks according to established schedules and maintain accurate operational logs.
- Interpret data from automated monitoring systems and respond appropriately to alarms and alerts.
Maintenance & Repair
- Conduct preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment including pumps, filters, heat exchangers, ozone generators, and UV systems.
- Diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform repairs or coordinate with vendors for service when needed.
- Clean and service filtration components including filter media replacement, backwashing, and protein skimmer maintenance.
- Maintain inventory of spare parts and repair components to ensure rapid response capability for system failures.
Water Quality Management
- Prepare and dose appropriate chemicals to maintain required water parameters according to established protocols.
- Perform water changes and system flushes as scheduled or required based on water quality conditions.
- Maintain specialized water parameters for different habitat types, particularly for sensitive coral systems.
Emergency Response
- Respond to life support emergencies including power failures, equipment malfunctions, and water quality deviations.
- Implement emergency protocols to protect animal health during system failures.
- Participate in on-call rotation to provide 24/7 emergency response coverage for critical systems.
- Assist with disaster preparedness and response related to life support systems.
Installation & Construction Support
- Assist with installation of new life support components and system upgrades.
- Perform basic plumbing, including PVC pipe assembly, valve installation, and sealing.
- Support exhibit construction projects by providing input on life support requirements and installation.
- Conduct system testing and startup procedures for new installations.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and system modifications.
- Document water quality test results and system performance metrics in appropriate logs and databases.
- Report equipment malfunctions, water quality issues, and system concerns to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Assist in developing standard operating procedures for life support operations.
Policies, Systems, Processes, Procedures, Standards and Reports
- Follow all relevant functional policies, processes, standard operating procedures, and instructions to ensure that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.
- Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely functional MIS statements and reports to meet corporate and functional requirements, policies, and standards.
Safety, Quality & Environment
- Apply safety, quality and environmental management policies, procedures, and controls to ensure employee safety, legislative compliance, delivery of high-quality water systems and a responsible environmental attitude.
- Handle chemicals safely according to established protocols and maintain current knowledge of safety data sheets.
- Maintain clean and organized mechanical spaces to ensure safe operations and efficient workflow.
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement of department's systems, processes and practices considering international best practice, improvement of business processes, cost reduction and productivity improvement.
- Suggest improvements to system design and operational procedures based on field experience and observation.
Job Requirements:
Qualifications & Experience:
- Associate's degree or technical certificate in aquaticlife support systems, water treatment technology, and mechanical engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in aquarium life support operations or related field such as water/wastewater treatment, pool operations, or marine engineering.
- Experience with mechanical systems including pumps, filters, and control systems.
- Demonstrated understanding of water chemistry and water quality management.
- Aquarium Life Support Operator (ALSO) certification preferred or ability to obtain within first year.
Skills:
- Proficiency in operation and maintenance of pumps, filters, ozone generators, UV systems, and control equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret system schematics, mechanical drawings, and equipment manuals.
- Basic water chemistry knowledge and water testingskills.
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
- Plumbing skills, including PVC assembly and repair.
- Basic electrical knowledge for equipment operation and safety.
- Computer skills for monitoring systems and record keeping.
- Ability to work independently and make sound operational decisions.
Job Context:
- Work is primarily performed in mechanical rooms, filtration areas, and around exhibit systems.
- Regular exposure to water, high humidity, noise, and chemicals.
- Position requires lifting up to 25kg, climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, and standing for extended periods.
- Rotating shifts including weekends, holidays, andovernight and on-call responsibilities.
- Must respond to emergency situations regardless of scheduled hours.
- Occasional work in wet exhibits may require swimming ability and comfort working around marine animals.
