Job description

Basic Function

Provide high standard, cost-effective care of the Emergency Services to JHAH eligible medical recipients under the supervision of Attending Physician. Execute duties within the approved Credentials & Privileges provided by the Hospital Credentials & Privileging Committee.

Scope

Attend service clinical and educational rounds including morning reports and sign-out rounds when appropriate. Attend and participate in the multi-disciplinary team rounds. Attend and contribute to service/department Quality and Safety activities including reviews, audits, and presentations. Report patients' adverse events to the appropriate department/service office. Attend and contribute to service and department business meetings. Prepare and provide patient reports as required within hospital policy. Participate actively when assigned to a committee. Keep informed of and adhere to hospital and departmental policies and bylaws. Ensure legible and timely entries into patients' records. Maintain complete patient case records. Adhere to hospital policy regarding patient record confidentiality. Participate in medical records audits as required.

Principal Contacts

Daily contact with hospitalized patients and their families, nurses, other Physicians, and medical staff. Close contact with Emergency Medical Service physicians, Clinical Medicine Services physicians, Surgical & Diagnostic Services physicians, Radiology Services, and other requesting services.

Principal Duties

Inpatient Duties:

  1. Assess and admit patients through Emergency Room, outpatient clinics, and transfers from other hospitals as directed by the attending Physician.
  2. Carry out investigations and admission work-up as indicated.
  3. Conduct daily rounds on admitted patients and assigned consults.
  4. Re-evaluate patients throughout the workday as needed.
  5. Attend to admitted patients during weekends as per service arrangements.
  6. Respond promptly to emergency calls and tend to patients as required.
  7. Participate in trauma care, Code blue, or rapid response, according to credentials and privileges.
  8. Answer inpatient consultations within required timeframes.
  9. Conduct rounds on ICU patients when on-call.
  10. Plan and prepare patients for discharge.
  11. Dictate discharge summaries.
  12. Provide 24-hour in-house call as per schedule.

Outpatient Duties:

  1. Attend assigned outpatient clinics within approved credentials & privileges.
  2. Refer patients to other services as appropriate.
  3. Evaluate emergency room patients and perform minor emergency procedures.

Operating Room Outpatient Procedure Area Duties (specific to certain specialties):

  1. Assist in the operating room when assigned.
  2. Perform operative procedures within privileges.
  3. Manage perioperative anesthesia within privileges.
  4. Maintain punctuality and professionalism in the OR.
  5. Keep patients' caregivers informed of outcomes.
  6. Dictate operative reports when required.
  7. Ensure safe transfer out of OR with proper documentation.
Experience

Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the specialty post-internship, preferably in a university-affiliated teaching hospital.

  • Participate in teaching and educational activities for junior staff, students, and interns.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills.
  • Maintain required continuous medical education credits.
