We are hiring a
Data Governance Engineer responsible for data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring to ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory frameworks such as GDPR, DPA, ISO, etc. The successful candidate will develop and maintain an internal data catalog with automated data labeling and quality metrics, perform access management, and uphold data security best practices.
The Data Governance team in the Commercial Systems unit aims to enable secure and well-governed access to comprehensive data sets from various internal and external sources within a data mesh. The team utilizes open-source data governance tools like Trino and Ranger, defines and executes governance processes, and promotes data democratization at Canonical.
Location: This role is remote within the EMEA region.
Responsibilities include:- Define, monitor, and enforce data governance policies
- Design, implement, and maintain data labeling and quality metrics in the data catalog
- Deploy and operate team-developed services
- Depending on seniority, mentor and provide career development guidance
- Develop and promote best engineering and organizational practices
Candidate requirements:- Strong academic record from high school and university
- Degree in a technical field or a compelling alternative narrative
- Proven track record of exceeding expectations
- Experience with data quality, governance, and security tools and processes
- Proficiency in Python and SQL
- Excellent English communication and presentation skills
- Result-driven with personal motivation to meet commitments
- Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks
Nice-to-have skills:- Experience in performance engineering and security
- Familiarity with Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino
