The Chief of Procurement in the mining sector is responsible for leading the strategic direction, planning, and execution of all procurement activities across the organization. This includes managing supply chain operations, sourcing critical materials, vendor management, contract negotiations, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and sustainability practices. The role demands deep understanding of the mining industry's supply needs, market volatility, and logistics, while ensuring cost-effectiveness, risk mitigation, and timely delivery of goods and services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement procurement strategies aligned with the company’s operational goals and the unique demands of the mining industry.
- Oversee sourcing, contract negotiation, and supplier relationship management for key commodities, equipment, and services.
- Lead tendering processes, vendor assessments, and commercial evaluations in compliance with corporate governance and regulatory frameworks.
- Collaborate with mining operations, engineering, and finance teams to forecast material and equipment needs.
- Ensure timely procurement and delivery of materials to remote or operationally challenging mining sites.
- Establish and monitor procurement KPIs, cost-saving initiatives, and budget adherence.
- Develop and maintain risk management strategies related to supply disruptions, price volatility, and geopolitical risks.
- Drive digital transformation and adoption of procurement systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) for efficiency and transparency.
- Ensure ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) compliance and sustainability standards in the supply chain.
- Manage a high-performing procurement team and build internal capabilities through training and development.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or related field.
- Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., CIPS, CPSM, PMP) is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 10–15 years of experience in procurement, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within the mining, oil & gas, or heavy industries.
- Strong knowledge of mining equipment, spare parts, contractor services, and international sourcing.
- Proven track record of successful cost savings, contract negotiations, and supplier performance management.
- Familiarity with ERP systems (preferably SAP or Oracle).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work in dynamic, cross-functional, and multicultural environments.
- Fluent in English; additional languages are a plus depending on region of operation.
