About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Freelance CFO with strong expertise in the construction and infrastructure sector to provide strategic financial leadership and hands-on support. This role is ideal for a finance professional who understands the complexities of construction projects, cash flow management, and cost controls, while offering flexible, part-time, or project-based engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Strategy & Planning
- Develop and oversee financial strategy aligned with company goals and project pipeline.
- Advise leadership on capital structure, debt/equity funding, and risk management.
- Build financial models for new bids, tenders, and long-term projects.
- Cash Flow & Working Capital Management
- Monitor project cash flows, progress payments, and retainage.
- Optimize working capital through receivables, payables, and vendor financing.
- Ensure adequate liquidity for ongoing projects.
- Project Cost Control & Reporting
- Implement robust cost-tracking systems by project and phase.
- Review job costing, budgets vs. actuals, and variance analysis.
- Provide profitability insights per project, region, or client.
- Fundraising & Banking Relations
- Support in securing construction loans, bonding, and credit facilities.
- Maintain relationships with banks, investors, and financial institutions.
- Prepare financial documentation for lenders and bonding companies.
- Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and construction-specific reporting.
- Oversee insurance, bonding, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Implement internal controls to prevent cost overruns, fraud, or misallocations.
- Leadership & Advisory
- Partner with CEO/MD and project managers to drive financial discipline.
- Mentor finance staff and establish best practices in accounting/reporting.
- Provide board-level financial presentations and investor updates.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a CFO, VP Finance, or senior finance leader within a construction or project-based company.
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting (WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion, job costing).
- Experience with ERP/software used in construction (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Procore, QuickBooks with construction modules).
- Solid background in cash flow forecasting, project financing, and capital planning.
- CPA, CFA, CMA, or equivalent preferred.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.
Engagement Details

- Contract & Claims Finance – understanding of retainage, progress billing, change orders, and claims management.
- Bonding & Insurance Management – experience with surety bonds, liability coverage, and risk transfer.
- Project Financing – securing construction loans, lines of credit, and managing draw schedules.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Payments – handling milestone-based payments, lien waivers, and payment applications.
