Overview
As the Electrical Distribution Technician (Airfield Lighting Technician) assigned to Al Udeid Air Force Base in Qatar, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and repair of airfield lighting and enhance U.S. military capabilities on the airfield. This position requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and an unwavering commitment to safety. You will operate, maintain, and repair all airfield lighting systems, including High Voltage/HV 5kV lines and the highest input 2400 kV lines in specified locations on base. The qualified candidate will operate, maintain, and repair airfield lighting on all runways, obstruction lighting, taxiways, aircraft ramps, and area lighting. Airfield lighting components include airfield lighting vaults, dedicated backup generators, fuel tanks, and Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS). You will operate, maintain, and repair the four (4) approach systems with each on individual dedicated circuits; two runway circuits; and 16–24 taxiway circuits, and the Precision Approach Path Indicators on all four approaches, and maintain all four runway threshold light circuits.
Responsibilities
- Leadership and Management: Manage resources and activities devoted to installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical power generating and control systems.
- Quality and Compliance: Maintain strict compliance with all applicable PWS requirements, host nation laws, and DoD/State Department requirements as applicable.
- Technical Expertise: Must have a minimum of five (5) years of full-time experience in high and/or medium voltage electrical systems.
- Knowledge of electronics and electricity principles, including generation, conversion, distribution, and utilization; understanding of high/medium/low voltage circuits, circuit breakers, switches, fuses, regulators, relays, instruments, and meters.
- Conduct regular inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure system integrity and functionality.
- Maintain compliance with contractual requirements and ensure performance meets or exceeds manufacturer specifications.
- Safety and Compliance: Train and educate team members on safety best practices and activity hazard analysis. Manage accumulation of hazardous waste and POL storage.
- Reporting and Documentation: Prepare outage reports and ad-hoc reports; maintain operation, inspection, and maintenance records; record meter readings and data; provide information for reports and recommend changes to correct defects or improve procedures.
- Qualifications: Must have experience operating and maintaining low voltage systems (24V to 600V) and electrical distribution (up to 13,800V). Must be an incumbent employee to be exempt from certain compliance requirements. Must have completed an approved DOD or commercial equivalent school or apprenticeship in Airfield Lighting. Fluency in English is required and knowledge of electronics and distribution systems is essential. Ability to interpret instrument readings, wiring diagrams, schematics, drawings, and technical publications; operate and maintain distribution panels and related equipment; use test equipment; follow safety rules and policies.
- Education, Experience, and Credentials: Minimum of ten (10) years’ full-time experience in the Airfield Lighting field. Provide evidence of passing ICC national journeyman or master certification exam (as applicable). Must have a valid passport and be able to obtain a residency work visa. Must pass CENTCOM medical requirements and be fit-for-duty to deploy. Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Skills and Abilities: Must be able to complete local Flight Line Driving Certification during transition and maintain it during employment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to multi-task under stress, and excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Security Clearance: Secret Clearance Required. US Citizenship is required and must maintain required Secret clearance eligibility.
- Austere Working Conditions: Capable of performing in inclement weather and extreme temperatures. Able to perform duties in PPE as required.
