The City of Swan is home to a thriving and diverse community, with a well-established youth development and engagement approach. An opportunity is now available to become a part of the Youth Development team and support the operation of either the Bullseye (Bullsbrook) Youth Centre or the Ellenbrook Youth Centre. Both youth centres provide a safe and accessible space for young people aged 12 to 18 years to socialise, recreate, and participate within their local community.
Reporting to the relevant Youth Development Officer in their area, the Senior Youth & Community Project Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of Bullseye Youth Centre or Ellenbrook Youth Centre’s drop-in programs, school holiday programs and other relevant programs. The position will require considerable initiative in delivery of the service, developing partnerships and has a significant amount of administrative and reporting requirements. This role will engage directly with young people to promote participation in the youth centre and supporting programs; incorporate youth input and ownership into program design; develop a more 'youth friendly' community in their relevant area.
In addition, the Senior Youth & Community Project Officer is responsible for supervising and supporting a team of casual and part time youth workers, plus volunteers, in the delivery of programs, and to ensure professional practices are adhered to.
This key role works within industry standards associated with working with young people and in accordance with all relevant City of Swan Youth Development’s Codes of Practice, guidance notes and relevant City of Swan policies and procedures.
Key Accountabilities include, but are not limited to;
- Take the lead role in planning, implementing and supervising a range of activities that encourage youth participation at the Bullseye Youth Centre/ Ellenbrook Youth Centre and supporting programs
- Lead, manage and develop a team to ensure the successful delivery of services that uphold professional practices.
- Supervise and a support a team that empowers staff and recognises and acknowledges individual skills.
- Engage directly with young people, to:
- Create a safe and welcoming environment for all young people
- promote participation in the Youth Centre and supporting programs,
- incorporate youth input and ownership into program design,
- Provide programs, support, information or advocacy to young people, to assist them to build skills, confidence and their own capacity.
- Provide referral pathways where case management or specialised services are required.
- Look at ways to promote young people positively to the broader community to aid in more 'youth friendly' communities.
- Assess youth input, emerging local issues and trends in the development of appropriate programs and services
- Represent the City of Swan in the community and at relevant meetings with stakeholders
- Use evaluation tools to assess and report on the operation of Youth Centre and supporting programs
- Provide written reports to the organisation, including Annual Business Plan and quarterly reports, on the operation of Youth Centre and supporting programs
About you
The successful candidate will have the following:
- Tertiary qualification in Youth Work or similar, or demonstrated progress towards qualification
- Proven leadership experience in leading and supporting teams within employment and/or community services or programs
- Experience in managing youth activities both centre based and within the community
- Have working knowledge of social, cultural and economic issues impacting young people and appropriate referral pathways to support
- Strong administration skills with competency in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to communicate effectively with young people and build rapport in a range of settings
- Understanding of Youth Work Code of Ethics
- Be available to work flexible hours, including evenings, during school holidays and occasional weekends for community and youth events
- A satisfactory National Police Certificate
- Current ‘C’ Class driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle
- Current First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain prior to commencement
- Current Working with Children Check
