PhD Thesis "Development and Characterization of Cathode Materials for Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries"

Join us to apply for the PhD Thesis "Development and Characterization of Cathode Materials for Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries" role at AIT Austrian Institute of Technology.

As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we are dedicated to addressing major challenges such as climate change and digitalization. Our open culture of innovation and international teams aim to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution globally and to contribute positively to society and the economy.

Our Battery-Technologies team, part of the Center for Transport Technologies in Vienna, invites applications for a PhD position. The focus is on developing next-generation energy storage materials for sustainable electromobility, specifically novel cathode active materials for rechargeable magnesium batteries based on metal oxides.

You will work on topics including:

  • Synthesis and physicochemical characterization of metal oxide cathodes
  • Advanced characterization using ex-situ and in-situ/operando techniques
  • Electrode design and development using environmentally friendly water-based methods
  • Fabrication and electrochemical testing of battery cells

Your tasks will include literature review, material synthesis, electrochemical performance testing, hands-on experience with energy storage materials, data analysis, reporting, publication, and participation in conferences.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (or near completion) in Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or related fields
  • Knowledge in Inorganic Chemistry and Materials Science
  • Experience in metal oxide synthesis and electrochemical measurement techniques is preferred
  • Good command of technical English

What to Expect:

  • Start date: 01.08.2025 (flexible)
  • Salary: EUR 2,625/month (gross, 14 payments/year) for 30 hours/week
