Sr Network Dev Engineer, Network Provisioning and Automation (Level 6)

Network Provisioning and Automation (NPA) is seeking a passionate and innovative Senior Network Development Engineer with a strong drive to automate and simplify network processes. This role reports directly to the Software Development Manager for NPA and is responsible for all tools related to network automation within Amazon's fulfillment networks.

The NPA team develops and continuously enhances core network provisioning components used by thousands of Amazon employees, devices, robots, and other user infrastructure worldwide. Join a world-class, fast-paced team with an entrepreneurial spirit, working alongside other engineers to automate and improve technology supporting our Fulfillment Centers and Transportation sites.

We need a Network Development Engineer to provide technical leadership in our next-generation networks supporting robotics, IoT, sensors, drones, and mobile devices. You should be comfortable with taking risks, iterating on designs, and focusing on security and reliability, influencing best practices across teams.

Your responsibilities include building tools for the largest fulfillment network, mentoring support teams, and driving root cause analysis for provisioning events impacting the business. Our goal is to create mechanisms for automated network infrastructure management—discovery, bootstrapping, configuration, operational readiness, and recovery—aiming for zero-touch, software-managed networks.

This high-ownership role offers scope for innovation. We value entrepreneurial spirits who collaborate and solve diverse technical challenges, translating business needs into concrete systems and prototypes, leveraging languages and technologies like Java, Python, Linux, and AWS services including GreenGrass and IoT. You will work with talented engineers to redefine industry standards, learning and impacting many people along the way.

Key Attributes and Responsibilities

  • Loves Automation: Automate management of hundreds of millions of devices.
  • Highly Analytical: Use data-backed problem solving, processes, and statistical methods.
  • Engaged by Ambiguity: Explore new problem spaces and identify gaps to deliver customer value.

You will:

  • Identify problems, develop solutions, and use metrics to assess system performance, always prioritizing customer experience.
  • Lead engineering teams, develop their capabilities, and guide technical decisions.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Drive engineering decisions affecting device management across Amazon fulfillment sites globally.
  • Partner with SDMs, robotics engineers, product managers, and customers to innovate in compute automation.

A Day in the Life

  • Implement new software for global edge compute automation.
  • Design solutions for emerging business needs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and define features.

Benefits

Amazon offers comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, parental leave, PTO, and 401(k). Benefits vary by location and employment type.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of automation scripting experience (Python, Bash, Shell, Perl).
  • 8+ years of experience with internet routing protocols.
  • 5+ years in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Experience with Machine Learning and AI is a plus.

We value diverse backgrounds and encourage passionate candidates to apply, even if not all qualifications are met.

About the Team

Our team manages Amazon's compute and device infrastructure automation, emphasizing simple, fault-tolerant solutions. Based mainly in Austin, we foster a collaborative environment focused on engineer development and innovation.
