Job Description: Senior Lawyer at Court Services Victoria

Court Services Victoria (CSV) provides corporate services and facilities to support the judicial, quasi-judicial, and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunals, including the Judicial College and Judicial Commission.

Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, along with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and CSV are known as the ‘Courts Group'.

Our team enables the Courts Group to achieve its strategic priorities.

The Legal and Governance team within the Office of General Counsel at CSV offers expert legal, compliance, and governance advice on a broad spectrum of issues.

About the role:

This is a full-time ongoing position based in Melbourne CBD, with flexible working arrangements. The Senior Lawyer reports directly to the Manager, Legal and Governance. We seek an adaptable, collaborative professional with expertise in areas such as public law, administrative law, and litigation, committed to delivering high-quality work in a complex environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Providing authoritative legal advice across the Courts Group in areas including public law, administrative law, and statutory interpretation.
  2. Managing complaints, disputes, and litigation effectively.
  3. Conducting legal research and analysis.
  4. Drafting complex legal opinions.
  5. Ensuring compliance with CSV's legislative obligations, including privacy, freedom of information, and integrity.
  6. Reviewing and advising on policies and procedures.
  7. Drafting, negotiating, and reviewing a variety of legal documents such as contracts, property agreements, and MOUs.
  8. Staying informed on legal developments, updating resources, and preparing briefing documents.
  9. Supporting senior management and mentoring junior lawyers.

About you:

  • Bachelor of Laws or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Victorian practising certificate or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Experience providing high-quality legal advice within government settings.
  • Substantial experience in statutory interpretation, administrative/public law, and litigation.
  • Additional experience in areas relevant to CSV, such as commercial law, anti-discrimination law, employment relations, or Crown land management, is highly regarded.
  • Strong research, analytical, and communication skills.
