We are seeking a PhD candidate to join the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, starting from October 1, 2025, with a contract until September 30, 2028.

The candidate will join the Cluster of Excellence EurAsian Transformations, which involves over 30 researchers from four institutions. The cluster explores issues of diversity, mobility, and identity across Eurasia from antiquity to the present, emphasizing interdisciplinary dialogue and international cooperation.

The PhD project will focus on "Geographies of Power in the Eastern Mediterranean World (c. 1000-1800)" and will be part of Research Node 1 and the Transversal Working Group 4. The candidate will work on a dissertation related to one of the subprojects, such as resource accumulation, nature and environments in Ottoman sources, or mobility in Byzantium. Responsibilities include research, teaching, administrative tasks, and active participation in cluster activities, with expectations to publish and present research internationally.

Ideal candidates should have excellent knowledge of at least one source language and two modern Eurasian languages, be in the initial phase of their PhD, and possess good English skills. German skills are advantageous. The role requires teamwork, interdisciplinary engagement, and a strong academic record.
