Job Purpose:
The Deputy Head of Primary (Teaching and Learning) is responsible for the strategic leadership and management of curriculum development, teaching quality, and raising academic achievement across the Primary School. The role supports teachers in delivering high-impact teaching strategies and ensures alignment with the School’s mission, vision, and educational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Strategic Development
- Lead teaching and learning practices to ensure they are current, engaging, and aligned with national/state standards and the School’s educational philosophy.
- Develop and promote a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
- Work with the leadership team to develop academic priorities and goals.
- Make data-driven decisions and communicate these effectively to staff.
- Show appreciation for Carmel School’s rich heritage and culture, working effectively within this context.
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge of educational research, pedagogy, assessment, and reporting in a primary school setting.
- Lead by example, modelling a motivational approach to achieving high standards.
- Assist the Head of Primary with operational aspects of daily leadership.
Teaching and Learning
- Monitor teaching quality through classroom observations and student data analysis.
- Collaborate with staff to analyze data and implement findings into classroom practice.
- Ensure age-appropriate teaching strategies are applied across all year groups (K-6).
- Update and monitor electronic records for curriculum alignment, assessment, and feedback procedures.
- Keep parents regularly informed of student progress.
- Maintain a teaching load to support students and teachers.
- Collaborate with the Inclusive Education Coordinator and School Psychologist to support and challenge students appropriately.
- Monitor academic outcomes to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for intervention.
- Demonstrate excellent understanding of the EYLF and pedagogy in Early Childhood.
- Maintain memberships with professional bodies for ongoing professional development.
- Promote innovation and best practices in teaching and learning.
Staff Development and Support
- Mentor and coach teachers in instructional strategies.
- Support early career teachers in their development.
- Seek professional learning opportunities to enhance educator skills.
- Support the school’s teacher appraisal processes.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education (required); Master’s in Educational Leadership or research (preferred).
- Teaching certification relevant to primary education.
- Minimum of 7 years’ teaching experience with demonstrated leadership in curriculum or teaching and learning.
- Proven ability to lead instructional improvement and manage change.
- Deep understanding of current educational research and pedagogy.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to analyze data for instructional decisions.
- Commitment to inclusive, student-centered education.
