Your Responsibilities

• Participation in the European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant project "Celtic and Latin glossing traditions: uncovering early medieval language contact and knowledge transfer (GlossIT)" (https://glossit.uni-graz.at/en/)
• Digital editions (https://gams.uni-graz.at)
• Establishing a TEI/XML data model for glossed manuscripts
• HTR-supported transcriptions
• Analysing the corpus of glosses (Natural Language Processing, Text Reuse, Network Analysis, etc.)
• Synthesising the project findings
• Publication activities and conference/workshop presentations in the specialised context of GlossIT

Your Profile

• Completed doctorate/PhD in the field of Digital Humanities or Data Analytics (or similar qualification)
• Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
• Experience with digital editions, linguistic/philological projects, network analysis, and Natural Language Processing
• Required IT-knowledge: XML/TEI, Python, Natural Language Processing tools
• High level of commitment and motivation for scientific work, especially in the fields of Digital Humanities, (Historical) Linguistics, and Philology
• Independent working style and high level of initiative
• Strong teamwork and organizational skills

We offer an annual gross salary of at least € 69,060.59 for a fulltime position. An overpayment based on qualification and experience is possible.

Organisational Unit

Glosses are fingerprints of the society in which texts were composed, copied, and read. Most importantly, they play a much more significant role than previous research has acknowledged and offer insights about the multilingual and multi-ethnic environment of medieval manuscript and text production the principal texts cannot: they are first-hand testimonies of the close linguistic and cultural connections between Insular Celtic (Old Breton, Old Irish, Old Welsh) and Latin speakers. The ERC-CoG-Project GLOSSIT researches these contacts combining methods of comparative philology and historical linguistics, digital humanities (handwritten text recognition, network analysis, natural language processing), (cultural) history, and biological computation (applying DNA-sequence alignment methods to glosses).
