Deputy Head of School (Clinical Engagement)

$212k - $248k p.a. + 17% super and leave loading

  • Part-time (40%), fixed-term position for up to 5 years

The Deputy Head of School (Clinical Engagement) provides strategic and academic leadership to strengthen relationships with clinical partners and academic titleholders. The appointee will be a practising senior clinician. They will work with colleagues across both the Medical School and the broader Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences to drive the development and implementation of strategies that enhance clinically related staff engagement, well-being, and professional growth, ensuring a supportive and inclusive community.

Key responsibilities will include:

Academic Leadership, Citizenship and Service

  • Develop and implement a Medical School Clinical Engagement strategy that promotes collaboration, drives innovation, enhances clinical staff well-being, and fosters an inclusive and high-performing culture.
  • Provide strategic guidance to colleagues across the Medical School to strengthen relationships with clinical partners and academic titleholders, ensuring meaningful engagement and collaboration that enriches clinical education, research, and professional practice.
  • Develop and oversee inclusive professional development strategies that support career progression/academic promotion, including leadership pathways and initiatives such as the Women in Leadership Program.
  • Monitor, plan and advise on clinically related workforce matters including emerging academics, workforce distribution, and succession planning.
  • Advise on Academic Title Holder appointments or other positions.
  • Support and guide the clinical and clinician engagement activities of the Heads of Mayne Academies.
  • Contribute to School, Faculty and University governance, participating in key decision-making processes and acting as a trusted advisor to the Dean, Medical School.
  • Contribute to meaningful engagement of specialist colleges, government, public and private hospitals, and the community.

Teaching and Learning

  • Maintain personal academic standing as a teacher.
  • Contribute to, and promote to colleagues, the student selection processes, the provision of career advice, and the personal advisor network.

Research, Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Maintain personal academic standing as a researcher.
  • Foster research collaborations within the School, Faculty, other parts of the University, and external partners.
  • Provide leadership in research dissemination and knowledge translation.
  • Contribute to the growth and development of researchers and research supervisors.
  • Where applicable, supervise Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students to completion and other student research projects.

Organisational Relationships

This position reports to the Dean, Medical School. At times, the role will require functional oversight from the Executive Dean and Deputy Executive Dean, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences.

About You

  • Medical qualification and eligibility for registration as a medical practitioner in Australia, with a specialist qualification permitting registration with AHPRA and recognised by the appropriate specialist college.
  • Postgraduate qualification (PhD or MD by research) in an area related to Medicine or medical education, or equivalent scholarly contribution.
  • Outstanding leadership skills, including capabilities in strategic development, business management, and the building of effective teams.
  • High-level communication skills.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships, work collaboratively with colleagues, and to represent and promote the interests of the University to other academic units, healthcare executives, government, and professional bodies.
  • Track record as a clinical research leader including attracting and managing external research funding and leading significant research activities and outcomes.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge and highly developed skills in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and involvement in continuing education.
  • Current or previous professional relationship working within a clinical capacity within Southern Queensland.

Please note: Maintaining clinical engagement as a senior medical practitioner is essential. Applicants must hold and maintain a clinical position to be considered for this opportunity. It is a condition of appointment as Deputy Head of School (Clinical Engagement) to meet this requirement throughout the appointment.

The successful candidate may be required to complete pre-employment checks, including right to work in Australia, education verification, and AHPRA registration. You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment; employer-sponsored work rights are not available.
