Job summary

Gulf Drilling International seeks an experienced Electrical Engineer to guide power generation, distribution and control systems across our fleet. You will ensure electrical safety, regulatory compliance, and high system reliability to achieve uninterrupted operations.

Extensive hands-on experience with OEM training, EX compliance, and protection schemes is required. The role is on-site in Qatar, offering a challenging environment with significant impact on asset integrity and crew safety.

Qualifications

  • Extensive hands-on experience and OEM training on electrical systems, power generation, protection, MCC and transformers maintenance.
  • Experience with drilling rigs (jack-ups/land) and EX installations certification is required.
  • A degree in electrical engineering is preferred but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Lead high-level diagnostics for generators, switchboards, MCCs, VFDs, UPS and distribution networks.
  • Guide rig electricians through complex troubleshooting and protection-system interventions.
  • Ensure compliance with EX requirements, safety standards, and regulatory rules.
  • Review maintenance strategies and testing routines for critical electrical equipment.

To provide expert electrical engineering guidance, advanced fault diagnostics, and technical assurance for all power generation, distribution, and control systems across the fleet, ensuring electrical safety, regulatory compliance, system reliability, and consistently uninterrupted operations.


Minimum Qualifications

Extensive hands on experience and OEM training on electrical systems, power generation, power systems protection, MCC and transformers maintenance, drilling traction motors, AC and DC drives, installations certification in hazardous area (EX) on drilling rigs. A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is preferred but not essential.


Minimum Experience

7–10 years of electrical engineering experience in drilling rigs (jack‑ups/land), with strong exposure to power generation, switchboards, MCCs, VFDs, UPS systems, and EX equipment; experience in electrical safety audits, protection systems, fault diagnosis, and power‑system reliability.


Job‑Specific Skills

Advanced troubleshooting of AC/DC systems, generators, switchboards, relays, VFDs, UPS, and distribution networks, with strong knowledge of EX compliance, grounding, load management, and IEC/IEEE safety standards; proficient in CMMS planning,


Electrical Engineering Governance & Standards


  • Define and maintain electrical engineering standards, safety protocols, and maintenance governance as part of the enterprise asset ‑ management framework.

  • Approve electrical maintenance procedures, testing requirements, isolation protocols, and technical documentation.

  • Ensure compliance with Class rules, Flag State regulations, API/IEC standards, and hazardous area (EX) requirements.


Electrical System Reliability & Advanced Troubleshooting


  • Lead high‑level diagnostics and failure investigations for generators, power ‑ generation systems, switchboards, Motor Control Centers (MCCs), transformers, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), and distribution networks.

  • Guide rig electricians through complex and high ‑ risk troubleshooting, load restoration, and protection ‑ system interventions.

  • Validate RCA findings and ensure corrective actions address underlying electrical failure modes and protection failures.


Electrical Maintenance Strategy & Execution Assurance


  • Review and enhance PM strategies, testing intervals, and verification routines for electrical safety ‑ critical equipment and protection systems.

  • Validate CMMS job plans, protection‑setting requirements, and maintenance workflows for accuracy and completeness.

  • Ensure maintenance execution adheres to electrical safety standards and supports reliability, uptime, and certification compliance.


Electrical Safety, Audit & Compliance


  • Conduct safety audits covering grounding/bonding, insulation resistance, hazardous ‑ area equipment, protection relay testing, and emergency power systems.

  • Verify certification status, EX registers, and testing records in line with Class and regulatory requirements.

  • Identify electrical non ‑ conformities, assess risk, and recommend mitigation actions to Head of Maintenance/ senior technical leadership.


Electrical Projects, Upgrades & Commissioning


  • Provide subject ‑ matter expertise for electrical upgrades, generator replacements, VFD installations, and switchboard modernizations.

  • Review engineering deliverables, project scopes, single ‑ line diagrams, and FAT/SAT procedures.

  • Approve protection settings, electrical integration plans, load ‑ impact studies, and verify all electrical changes under the Management of Change (MOC) process.


Critical Spares, Obsolescence & Reliability Engineering


  • Assess and review critical spare inventories, obsolescence risks, and long ‑ lead electrical components with Supply Chain/ Procurement and Planning.

  • Monitor electrical reliability KPIs, trip/fault events, breaker performance, and system anomalies.

  • Recommend lifecycle upgrades, redundancy improvements, and fleetwide electrical reliability enhancements.


Documentation, Reporting & Data Integrity


  • Maintain up ‑ to ‑ date electrical single ‑ line diagrams, load calculations, hazardous‑area (EX) registers, and electrical certification files.

  • Issue detailed audit findings, incident analyses, and electrical integrity reports.

  • Ensure CMMS electrical asset data remains accurate, complete, and aligned with maintenance governance and configuration control.
