Under the direct supervision of the Design Engineer - Structural, develops, completes, and checks structural outfitting drawings in conformance with contract scope, statutory & code requirements, IMS procedures, design parameters, site survey input, and material compliance.
Accountabilities
Key Accountabilities:
- Stay updated on the latest marine industry practices for ship structural outfitting and support Engineers in establishing and reviewing design process deliverables.
- Design & develop structural details, including shop fabrication drawings, assembly plans, nesting plans, weld maps, connection details, and Material Take Off (MTO) for various ship types & MODUs.
- Create detailed engineering drawings based on concepts developed by the Structural Engineer, adhering to class rules & yard standards.
- Conduct site surveys, prepare field checks, take dimensions, and propose site modifications.
- Develop Structural Material Take Off (MTO) based on scope and survey data.
- Create 3D models from Approved for Construction (AFC) drawings and export shop drawings for fabrication.
- Develop lifting plans for structural modules and design jigs & fixtures necessary for fabrication.
- Produce drawings within the estimated schedule, ensuring accuracy and quality.
- Check drawings thoroughly before issuance to prevent rework, updating the checklist accordingly.
- Take ownership of drawings, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions for errors.
- Ensure drawings are produced efficiently to avoid budget overruns and rework.
- Issue drawings in compliance with safety requirements and classification rules.
- Ensure drawings meet all statutory code requirements specified in the contract.
- Display safe behavior on site and in the office.
- Produce drawings that meet contract technical specifications & class rules.
- Assist the design engineer in meeting departmental KPIs for quality.
Key Result Areas
- Deliver best practice engineering services for marine repair, conversion, new building, and offshore projects aligned with yard strategy.
- Provide fit-for-purpose engineering design and drawings with minimal rework.
Interactions and Working Relations
Internal: Section management, supervision, industrial workers, all operations sections, project managers.
Purpose: Update drawing progress, issue changes, and inform stakeholders promptly.
External: Subcontractors, service engineers, surveyors.
Purpose: Communicate structural design specifications and requirements.
Qualifications, Experience, and Job Skills
- Minimum ITI (Draftsman Trade) / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- At least 5 years’ experience in offshore structure drawing development, with strong knowledge of ACAD and Tekla software.
- Experience in marine design, preferably in a shipyard, with familiarity with structural design standards and welding practices.
