Job summary

ambiscale is seeking an independent PHP Engineer to own backend work across varied client projects. You’ll turn incomplete briefs into clear questions, make sensible technical choices, and deliver high-quality solutions with performance, security, and accessibility in mind.

You’ll work with AI as part of daily workflows and have influence on architecture, estimates, and technical standards, collaborating closely with a Tech Lead and cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in Backend/PHP
• Strong PHP 8.2+ and Symfony knowledge
• Solid software architecture understanding (SOLID, Patterns, Clean Architecture, DDD/CQRS)
• Experience with caching, queues, async processing, message brokers
• Experience building secure RESTful or GraphQL APIs; performance focus
• Comfort with AI-assisted workflows and critical thinking
• Fluent English and Polish (B2+)

Responsibilities

• Build and scale enterprise web applications and API-first architectures
• Ask the right business and technical questions from client briefs
• Break projects into modules, choose technologies, and create realistic estimates
• Ensure performance, security, accessibility, testing, and code quality
• Profile and optimize apps and integrate external systems and APIs

We’re looking for an independent PHP Engineer who enjoys varied client projects. Someone who can turn an incomplete brief into the right questions, sensible technical choices, and a realistic estimate, and then help build the solution to a high standard.

We assume you know how to write good code. What matters just as much is that you can look beyond it: think about performance, security, and accessibility, talk to clients, and speak up when you see a better way to do something.

We’re a one-stop shop for digital solutions. We build and support web and eCommerce products, from custom development through optimization and DevOps/FinOps to long-term maintenance.

We work with clients across Poland, Europe, and the US, including Żabka, Biedronka, Brand24, and the University of California (Berkeley). Our projects and technologies vary, so you won’t be stuck in one product or one context for years.

What will you be doing?

• Building and scaling enterprise web applications and API-first architectures,
• Looking at client briefs, spotting what is missing, and asking the right business and technical questions,
• Breaking projects into modules, choosing technologies, and preparing realistic estimates,
• Taking care of performance, security, accessibility, tests, and code quality,
• Profiling and optimizing applications and integrating external systems, payment gateways, and APIs,
• Working closely with clients, Project Managers, Front-end Developers, DevOps, and QA,
• Sharing your ideas and helping us improve our architecture, tools, and workflow.

What do we expect from you?

• At least 5 years of commercial experience in a Backend/PHP role,
• Very good knowledge of modern PHP (8.2+) and Symfony,
• A solid understanding of software architecture, including SOLID, Design Patterns, Clean Architecture, and the basics of DDD/CQRS,
• Experience with caching, queues, asynchronous processing, and message brokers,
• A practical approach to tests, static analysis, code review, Git, and CI/CD,
• Experience building secure RESTful or GraphQL APIs and solving performance issues,
• Confidence using AI in your everyday work, together with the habit of checking what it produces,
• Comfort with varied client projects, changing contexts, and briefs that do not arrive perfectly complete,
• Experience estimating work, naming assumptions and risks, and asking for missing information,
• The ability to explain technical decisions clearly (also to clients),
• Fluent English and Polish (at least B2),
• Independence, ownership, and the willingness to give and receive honest feedback.

Bonus points for:

• Sulu CMS or other PHP frameworks, such as Laravel or Laminas,
• Frontend experience with React / Next.js or Vue / Nuxt.js,
• Modern PHP runtimes such as FrankenPHP, Swoole, or RoadRunner,
• Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms, Headless CMS, or Composable Commerce.
