Job summary

OANDA is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build scalable, low-latency TypeScript/Node.js microservices powering our next-generation Trading Platform.

You will work on real-time financial APIs, live price streaming, and order execution on Google Cloud Platform, joining a team distributed across countries in an agile environment.

Qualifications

• Production experience with Node.js microservices.
• Experience designing and operating real-time or event-driven systems (Kafka, Redis, SSE, WebSockets).
• Practical knowledge of metrics, monitoring, and observability (Prometheus, Grafana).
• Experience with GCP or another major cloud platform (GKE, Cloud Run, Artifact Registry).
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated release workflows.
• Comfortable working in a monorepo with shared internal packages and versioned integrations.
• Practical knowledge of relational databases and SQL (querying, schema design).

Responsibilities

• Write reusable, testable, and maintainable code across a TypeScript monorepo (Lerna).

• Collaborate on architectural decisions and lead PoC efforts for candidate architectures.
• Share knowledge, review colleagues' code, and raise engineering standards across the team.
• Contribute to all stages of the software development lifecycle and deploy to production within the first month.

How do we work?

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer experienced in building scalable, low-latency TypeScript/Node.js microservices that power our next-generation Trading Platform. You'll be joining a team of engineers developing real-time financial APIs - from live price streaming and order execution to portfolio management - running at scale on Google Cloud Platform.

We are a highly agile group of people working closely together towards the same goal of providing the best client experience possible. The team consists of engineers working from multiple countries. We build and own a suite of microservices that form the backbone of OANDA's Universal Platform - a modern, cloud-native trading API layer. We believe that our experience, passion, and industry knowledge will ensure OANDA's Trading Platform success and the prosperity of our customers.

As a Senior Software Engineer you will:

• Design and implement low-latency, high-availability APIs using Node.js 22, TypeScript, Koa, and GCP (GKE, Cloud Run, Artifact Registry)


• Work with real-time data pipelines built on Kafka, Redis, ZeroMQ, and SSE streaming


• Write reusable, testable, and maintainable code across a TypeScript monorepo with Lerna


• Monitor and improve service performance using Prometheus metrics and Grafana dashboards


• Leverage AI-assisted coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor) as a standard part of your daily engineering workflow


• Lead proof-of-concept efforts for candidate architectures and contribute to architectural decisions


• Share knowledge, review colleagues' code, and raise the bar for engineering quality across the team


• Contribute to all stages of the software development lifecycle


• Onboard, understand our microservices architecture, and deploy your first code to production within your first month.


• Take full ownership of feature development, contribute to architectural improvements, and drive cross-team technical initiatives.

What skillset do you need to be successful in this role?

• Production experience with Node.js microservices (Node 18+, ideally Node 22)


• Experience designing and operating real-time or event-driven systems (Kafka, Redis, SSE, WebSockets, or similar)


• Practical experience with metrics, monitoring, and observability (Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent)


• Experience with GCP or another major cloud platform (GKE, Cloud Run, Artifact Registry)


• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated release workflows (semantic-release, CircleCI, or equivalent)


• Comfortable working in a monorepo with shared internal packages and versioned integrations


• Practical knowledge of relational databases and SQL (querying, schema design, indexing)

Nice to have:

• Experience with financial market data (pricing, order execution, portfolio management)


• Experience with AI-assisted development tooling (Claude Code, Cursor)


• Background working with OpenAPI specifications and contract-first API design
