Job summary

Join Akamai Technologies, Inc. as a Senior Site Reliability Engineer in the Virtualization & Host Platforms team. You will work on Linux host/server technologies, hardware bootstrapping, firmware upgrades, and cross-team collaboration to ensure reliable datacenter services.

Qualifications

• Advanced Linux internals and systems administration knowledge.
• Deep Linux kernel and virtualization understanding (KVM/QEMU).

• Ability to diagnose hardware/firmware vs. kernel/driver issues.
• Proficiency in Python and shell scripting to implement solutions.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.

Join our highly skilled Site Reliability Engineering team

Our team designs, develops, and manages applications and infrastructure that support Akamai's Compute products and services. We do this while maintaining Akamai's mission at the forefront of what we do: make life better for billions of people, billions of times a day.

As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer in the Virtualization & Host Platforms (VHP) - Server Enablement & Qualification (SEQ) team, you will be at the forefront of Akamai Cloud compute host and server technologies. VHP is responsible for all Linux platforms from the hardware to the host and guest platforms, and SEQ in particular works closely with next-generation HW teams to enable new hardware via our network bootstrapping service, provide seamless firmware upgrade models, and work with other VHP teams to provide a cohesive and performant solution to our internal infrastructure customers and operators to ensure all servers succeed in our datacenters.

You will have opportunities to write software automating our processes, help diagnose and resolve challenging production issues, advance initiatives to improve resource utilization and customer experience, and learn from a highly skilled engineering team. This position will require creative thinking combined with deep domain expertise in the areas of Linux systems engineering, performance tuning, hardware interfaces, systems administration, and configuration management.

As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for:

• Developing, testing, and distributing changes to software, services, and tools the VHP team is responsible for.
• Designing and implementing enhancements to VHP observability infrastructure in order to identify and correct problems before they impact our customers
• Developing subject matter expertise in VHP components.
• Comfortable working in new tooling, code and environments and automating what’s possible.
• Collaborating with our support, operations and engineering teams to investigate and troubleshoot complex problems
• Participating in on-call rotations, guiding restoration and repair of service-impacting issues

Do what you love

To be successful in this role you will need:

• Advanced level experience in Linux internals, system administration, and a deep understanding of underlying hardware.
• Advanced level experience with the Linux kernel and OS and an understanding of virtualization technologies (KVM/QEMU).
• Advanced level experience with designing, developing, and deploying software and infrastructure at scale
• Skills identifying whether hardware-test failures originate from firmware, BIOS/UEFI configuration, device firmware, kernel/driver behavior, or the physical test environment
• Skills using Python and shell scripting to independently implement solutions,
• Advanced level experience in a Development or SRE role, preferably working with large scale distributed systems.
• Experience with tools like SaltStack, Ansible, Chef, or Puppet for managing infrastructure at scale
• Great communication and collaborative skills.
• Relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.
