Aquia is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in modernizing the digital disability benefits experience on VA.gov. As a key member of a cross-functional agile team, you''ll help design, build, and maintain scalable, secure, and accessible software that directly improves the Veteran experience and supports faster, more accurate claims processing. This position focuses primarily on backend systems and integration with critical VA services and requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a security clearance.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend systems primarily using Ruby on Rails, ensuring security, performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Participate in technical design discussions and contribute to scalable and resilient architecture decisions.
  • Integrate with VA backend services through secure and reliable APIs.
  • Monitor system health and troubleshoot production issues using observability tools and dashboards (e.g., Datadog).
  • Apply accessibility, security, and performance best practices throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Write clean, testable, well-documented code and collaborate through GitHub.
  • Work closely with product managers, designers, and researchers to deliver features that meet user needs and business priorities.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies including sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog refinement within a 2-week sprint cadence.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails or similar backend frameworks for API development.
  • Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, data modeling, and integration patterns with third-party services.
  • Familiarity with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and agile development practices.
